R.I.P. Tom Mankiewicz

Tom Mankiewicz (June 1, 1942 - July 31, 2010) was a screenwriter/director/producer of motion pictures and television, perhaps best known for his work on the James Bond films and his contributions to Superman: The Movie and the television series, Hart to Hart.

Not a big fan of his Bond work (too jokey for my taste), liked what he did with Superman. Never met the guy, but he really came across as likable and enthusiastic about movies in all the interviews I ever saw.

Re: R.I.P. Tom Mankiewicz

I was wondering how he was related to other Mankiewiczs in Hollywood:

He was the son of director Joseph Mankiewicz (All About Eve) and nephew of Herman Mankiewicz (Citizen Kane). He was also the 1st cousin of the good Ben of At the Movies fame.

He picked a bad day to die since we're all doing vs. director threads now.

But seriously i did like him of the Moore Bonds.

His work as "Creative Consultant" on the first two SUPERMAN movies contributed significantly towards their success. Rest in peace, Mr. Mankiewicz.

Great writer. I appreciated his work on the Superman films. If anyone of you haven't already done so, listen to his commentary tracks with Richard Donner on Superman 1 and Superman 2: The Richard Donner Cut. They are really great and very informative.

Yeah, it's amazing how many times he had to correct Donner on the facts. If you ever met Tom on the street, you'd never imagine he'd have been a creative force behind the greatest superhero film of all time. He seemed more like a dive-bar regular than a screenwriter.

Wanna know how good this guy was?
Compare Sean Connery's lines that Mr. Mankiewicz wrote to NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN Bond dialog.

You said it best. There's just a "feel" to a movie when the writing clicks. So many in Hollywood don't seem to get that.
