IMDB | 2 July 2010

Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington's year dug in with the Second Platoon in one of Afghanistan's most strategically crucial valleys reveals extraordinary insight into the surreal combination of back breaking labor, deadly firefights, and camaraderie as the soldiers painfully push back the Taliban.

Got a chance to see this during the week. Highly recommended. It's a glib statement but "The Hurt Locker as Afghanistan documentary" is the most concise way of putting this. The movie focuses entirely on the platoon, with no news footage, interviews with generals or diplomats, or voice-overs.

Restrepo has been a option in the On Demand for the last couple of weeks.

A really compelling documentary about a group of guys in the Korengal Valley.

Just saw this today. Pretty crazy that people could live like that...and that we would send soldiers in there. And for what?

It has been available via Netflix streaming for at least a couple of weeks now. I have it in the queue and will probably get to it next week.

Got it on DVD for $10. Intense as hell. One of the best war documentaries I've ever seen, and easily one of the best 2010 films I've seen

You should check out 'Armadillo'. Also excellent.

Just saw this on Netflix, another great war doc. It really gave you a feel for what they go through over there. A real misuse of soldiers.

That's the other Afghan documentary I saw in theaters last year. Both were very good.

Sad News, Co-director Hetherington killed in Lybia today:

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationwo...,5844280.story

Reporting from Misurata, Libya— Tim Hetherington, an award-winning news photographer and Oscar-nominated co-director of the documentary "Restrepo," was killed Wednesday in an explosion in the Libyan city of Misurata, doctors and colleagues reported.

At least three other photojournalists were injured in the blast, which was believed to have been caused by a mortar round. The rebel-held city in western Libya has been under attack for several weeks by forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Kadafi.

Can't feel too bad about this one. He shouldn't have been in Lybia.

Pretty ignorant thing to say. Journalists on the front lines, especially one as dangerous Libya, should be hailed as heroes for their sacrifice.

A huge loss in news reporting and documentary filmmaking.

I agree a bit harsh, but christ, you spend enough time swimming with sharks you're gonna get bit. I know nothing about the guy personally, but if he had a wife, and more importantly kids, then he was a fool.

Or one could argue that he was doing important and dangerous work and that, despite the risks he faced (which I suspect he would have willingly acknowledged), this is a very tragic loss.

This. He risked his life getting the pictures/story out to everyone else, and people call this guy a fool?
