Tim Burton Suckers America Out of $120 Million: Weekend Box Office 3/5 - 3/7
After mediocre reviews, Alice in Wonderland will go onto have the biggest March release yet.
Ugh.
Despite only losing 293 locations overall, Avatar lost nearly 70-80% of it's 3D locations this weekend. Most theaters who were playing the film in 3D only are now playing it in 2D due to Alice taking up most 3D screens this weekend.
It's also important to note that prior to this weekend, Avatar's 3D locations consisted of 70-80% of its total screen count (its peak total of locations was 3,461 in week three). Alice's 3D locations only consist of 50-60% of its total screen count (its total locations plus screen count is significantly higher than that of Avatar during its peak).

I guess people didn't read the bad reviews before heading out to see Alice. No big surprise really; it happens all the time now. This is why shitty movies get huge opening weekends and potential sequels lined up before the movie is even done in theaters. Too bad.

A few people I know have raved about the movie on their Facebook / Twitter.
These people are clearly morons and I would never trust their cinematic taste.
No, I haven't seen the film and after the beating it's getting in its respective thread, I probably will be waiting for the eventual $5 Disney BD.

The reviews don't look like they've been that bad.

I don't recognize almost any of the positive reviewers on RT; and the actual positive reviews seem to make massive exceptions because Tim Burton is so "quirky."

I dunno, compared to some of the 20-30% ratings that a lot of the summer blockbusters were getting its middle of the line to me. IMDB is sitting at 7.5. Just saying that its not like the movie has been universally panned.

Besides the 3D being an utter crock of shit in IMAX (no dimensionality), I liked the film, Vegas Boy. Sure, it's got a tad too much Narnia thrown into the recipe but the world that Burton creates in "Underland" was amazing (if anything, Burton is a master of design). None of the performances are Oscar caliber but I thought it was better than a straight-up remake of the original story for the most part...
The part that brings it down to a 2 1/2 to 3 star level from a 4 to 5 star is ...
I wish somewhere would show it in 4K 2D as I'd really just love to stare at the design without constantly squinting at the 3D effect (I'm terrible at seeing 3D... especially in IMAX). Might see it again at the Alamo Drafthouse in RealD 4K for this reason. I bet this film will look wonderful on BD.

People are overplaying the "negative" response to the movie, it has mixed reviews and is not being flat-out shat upon.
This isn't Transformers 2 we're talking about.

Shutter Island is still holding steady. Looks like it'll get to $120-$125 mil and be a nice solid hit for Paramount.
The Wolfman reached $60 mil!!!! I guess it'll actually be able to double its opening, but barely. At least this means the BD will probably be out sooner than later.

I am sad a little that the Master:Rick Baker did such amazing work on this flim and not enough people really seen it.
I second the Blu-Ray of this should rock (extra's with Rick Baker please!).

Well I love Burton and all, but I'm going to try and see Avatar in 3D again before seeing Alice.

So now producing trailers people like enough to see a movie is "suckering" people out of their money?

I figured AIW would do $75, $80m tops... never would have guessed a $100m+ opening. I have no interest in seeing it, but obviously lots of people did. Although, I'd rather see Burton try something new again. He hasn't done much for me since Sleepy Hollow (aside from Sweeney Todd, which seems like an anomaly now).

From the trailers I seen in 3D it seems the 3d in Alice feels very gimmicky with things getting shoved at the camera, and other scenes didnt feel like they were shot to be in 3D so it was hard see what was going on, on screen.

Don't understand the "suckering" argument. I've seen trailers for weeks, months now, and they all seem to be pretty representative of what the movie is going to be. It's not my cup of tea, but the reviews do seem generally mixed, not horrific. I'm scratching my head here trying to figure out the hate.

1) I love it how people are all up in arms as we're trashing a film that's making a lot of money. "WAHHHH. People need to stop bitching and moaning. WAHHHH."
Have you never seen a Box Office thread here on DVD Talk before? The actual serious, strategic talks about box office are few and far between.
2) Here is what everyone (besides Austin Boy Lutter
) said about Alice in the film's thread a few posts down:
3) To make matters worse, our lovely own DVD Talk reviewers said:

Not any fun, this movie. Completely literal, mostly uninteresting characters, and a style that was a bit too drab for my taste.
The movie is such a mess that it makes coherent criticism difficult, because you want to point to everything at once as part of the problem.
Remember those old fashion electric football games where you put your "players" in some formation on either side of the line of scrimmage, and then the playing field vibrates so that the player move in some random manner in the hopes of advancing the player with the football? There are some scenes in the movie just like that, it felt aimless at times, it was totally a dud of a movie.
So. Fucking. Boring.
Joyless, frantic, utterly forgettable. Gets the spirit of "Alice" all wrong, because it's way too preoccupied with action scenes that feel cut-and-pasted out of "Chronicles of Narnia."
I wanted to love it. I'm a huge Burton fan. But this movie is devoid of energy and humor and plods along to its conclusion.

If you trust Brian Orndorf, that's your own problem!
Plus, no one is "up in arms"
Hyperbole much? Just pointing out that the movie is hardly being panned across the board.
