Movies With Almost Defiant Unhappy Endings(Spoilers)

Okay, this isn't necessarily one in which the bad guys win, but movies that end on a negative note that is so blunt and defiant that it's almost like a middle finger to the audience.

Some that spring to mind:

-Million Dollar Baby- a movie where I honestly think a sell out ending would have been better

-Invasion of the Body Snatcher's (1978)

-Drag Me to Hell (I liked this one)

-First two Planet of the Apes

-Usual Suspects

I thought of Million Dollar Baby right away when I saw this thread title. I also agree with other movies that have been mentioned. Right now I can't think of any that have unhappy endings.

Re: Movies With Almost Defiant Unhappy Endings(Spoilers)

I'm not sure I agree with The Usual Suspects, especially since...

Spoiler:
...it is revealed, or at least suggested, to the audience that most everything we had learned about the main characters of the film may have been bogus since it was based on the recollection of a man who was making things up as he went along. As such, it becomes an unexpected ending, but not necessarily unhappy.

The first film to spring to mind for me is one that most have not seen called Spellbinder (1988), that starred Kelly Preston, Tim Daly and the always entertaining Rick Rossovich.

Fallen

Happy ending being a relative term in this case, since they basically go from bad to worse and even more worse every few moments before the credits roll.

I actually only caught the end of that one once, and I would have mentioned it if it weren't for the fact that I thought no one would know about it. A similar ending would be Race With the Devil and Wicker Man (I'll just say the original, as the remake was more or less one big long middle finger to anyone who likes movies).

I also guess Night Breed could count, as the antagonist is revealed to be very much alive and kicking at the end.

- Usual Suspects
I'm not really sure what you are asking, b.c Usual Suspects doesn't seem anything like the description you give. Most people love the ending, it is the exact opposite of a middle finger to the audience, it's more like a big thumbs up & wink to the audience. It's a classic "cheering for the villain" movie, I remember seeing that movie in a packed crowd when it was in limited release & the audience was literally cheering for Spacey & the brilliance of the character pulling off what he did.

Off the top of my head, a more appropriate movie in accordance with your initial description would be Dogville.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence, which has two endings. The first one bittersweet (and you think it's over), and the next, which I found incredibly depressing.

Okay, upon reflection I think that should be removed from the list.

Absolutely Dogville. It's one of the most bleak movies, from start-to-finish, that I've ever watched.

Awakenings was supposed to be uplifting I guess, but it just wasn't.

I was most depressed that the movie wasn't so good and I was tricked into thinking I was leaving the theater sooner.

I thought Dancer in the Dark had a very happy ending because...

Spoiler:
...Bjork finally stopped singing.

Kidding. It was the unqualified abruptness of the ending that got to me. It was the antithesis of the typical ultra-dramatic hero dies Hollywood moment a la Braveheart, etc.

Definitely The Mist.

And add Platoon. Even though Sheen get evac'd, Elias and Barnes were the centers of that film.
