Question for all horror fans
Looking for some movie recommendations, so please chime in. Here's the kind of movies I'm looking for:
1) Horror, as in genuinely scary. An emphasis on atmosphere and chills over gore and violence is a plus.
2) Made within the past 5 - 7 years.
3) Nothing that could be classified as "torture porn." (Sorry, not my taste.)
Any takers?
Thanks!

The Descent and Drag Me To Hell are the only good recent horror films that come to mind.

Yeah, Ginger Snaps was great. I also enjoyed Ginger Snaps 2 but it's a real downer in the end. Ginger Snaps Back is also good but very different from the first two. But I believe all three of those are older than seven years.

That's a tough combination. Scary and the last 5-7 years. There have been a lot of good horror movies in that timeframe, but few have been really scary.
I wouldn't call either Ginger Snaps or Let The Right One In scary. Descent and Session 9 are good recommendations.
I'll add The Abandoned. That was a really creepy movie.
Another great movie was Dead End. Unfortunately, the US DVD is fullscreen. You can get the widescreen UK DVD (R2/PAL) for cheap.
And I liked Boo. The film is basically a collection of every haunted house movie cliche. But it works really well. It's worth a rental.

I can second The Orphanage and Let the Right One In. Awesome movies. Though, I would necessarily call them 'scary.' I really don't know if there is anything out there recent AND scary.
I'm holding out for Trick 'r Treat, which may hopefully fit the bill.

[Rec] was really well done... if you dont like foreign films you can go for Quarantine (it's not as good as Rec, but if you really hate subtitles then its a good alternative)
How about Cloverfield?
The miniseries Dead Set was fun with lots of good scares

I'd throw my vote in for The Descent and Session 9, also, although I think it might be one or two years outside of your preferred time frame I'd recommend "Stir of Echoes"

The Descent is a modern horror movie masterpiece.
Lots of great recommendations already mentioned. My picks:
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
The Strangers
Silent Hill
28 Days Later
28 Weeks Later

El Espinazo Del Diablo (a.k.a. The Devil's Backbone) was creepy until the major reveal came along way too early. After that, the movie just becomes a boring and predictable turd. Which is a shame since it did such a great job of creating a very eerie sense of foreboding and it left you with enough doubt as to the true nature of the events that were transpiring. Once you knew the truth, it required no effort to guess how it would all play out.
It would have been better if that reveal had been saved for the last ten minutes.
