Another great pick from the Criterion Collection.

I didn't know that was Richard Harris until I read the DVD case.
What a great performance ,acting job he did.

Plan to buy someone day. 9.5 out of 10,for me.

A little review not from me.
Spoiler:

"This Sporting Life" is one of the most famous of the British "kitchen sink" dramas of the 1950s and 1960s ("kitchen sink" films were very gritty, social realist films which were very popular in Britain at one time).

Frank Machin (Richard Harris) is a brutal, young miner in a city in northern England. Hoping for fame and fortune, he becomes a successful Rugby League football player. He uses his fame and fortune, along with physical violence, to try to force his widowed landlady (Rachel Roberts) to fall for him.

Photographed in bleak black-and-white, the film's scenes of emotional and physical domestic violence are still shocking today. Also notable are the violent, stylishly-shot rugby matches.

The cast are brilliant without exception, especially Richard Harris who manages to invest even his totally unsympathetic character with some degree of humanity.

I'm glad they shot this in B+W instead of color. Totally would have ruined the movie.

This movie was fantastic. Richard Harris was mesmerizing, totally absorbing story, very edgy, bold acting and writing, loved it. Almost like Kubrick would have shot it. This movie really reminded me of Raging Bull..showing a gladiator's sad and tragic side. Great pick!

I pcked this movie and I just wanted kudos to those who watched it. Very kitchen sink realism in this one. I watched it twice last week and thought the extras were pretty decent. Who knew Richard Harris was such a good actor.

If you guys enjoyed this check out Saturday Night/Sunday Morning with Albert Finney. Another good one from around the same time.

I'll watch it once I have it. I've liked the other Lindsay Anderson movies I've seen. Just didn't get to it quite yet.

Re: Criterion Film Club Week Six: This Sporting Life

I've only known Richard Harris as the veteran thespian and I've never seen him as a young man until I saw this movie. He plays a very unlikeable character; one that is full of anger and insecurities. He desperately wants to love and to be loved in return. He feels that he is misunderstood by those around him and therefore treats most of them with contempt. It is no wonder then that it is among children where he feels most secure and comfortable. Richard Harris gives such a compelling performance; very gritty and realistic and you will wince as you witness a man coming apart...
