Haywire (Soderbergh, 2011): MMA fighter Gina Carano in spy thriller

From Variety:
Director Steven Soderbergh has committed to next direct “Knockout,” a spy thriller that will mark the screen starring debut of Gina Carano, the mixed martial arts circuit fighter.

Relativity Media will fully finance, and Soderbergh plans a late January production start. Domestic distribution is expected to be locked quickly.

Soderbergh locked in the film just as his Warner Bros. comedy, “The Informant!,” made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The Matt Damon-starrer opens stateside on September 18.

Scripted by Lem Dobbs, “Knockout” casts Carano as a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who is given a second chance to use her skills for constructive purposes. The film is a closer cousin to “La Femme Nikita” and “Kill Bill” than “Million Dollar Baby,” in that it doesn’t take place in the fight ring. Rather, Soderbergh considers the film as a flat out action film in the James Bond mold, and will shoot in locations around the world that include Ireland, Turkey and the U.S.

Soderbergh will surround Carano will name actors in supporting roles.
Well, the man is certainly eclectic. Let's hope this one has a happier ending than Moneyball.

We all knew this was pretty much going to happen after her fight with Cyborg.

Soderbergh is an interesting filmmaker. First he makes a movie about a hooker/call girl with a real porn star, now this.

Does Gina feel her fighting days are over after her loss to Cyborg? I saw the fight and it was quite brutal, but I don't see why that would get her down. Of course there's the added attraction of making what you make in a year in several months and not risking true bodily harm!

All it takes is one fight to get her pretty face messed up. That and making a movie with Steven Soderbergh is a no-brainer.

Indeed. She has to take some time off after the fight anyway. why not make a Soderbergh film too?

McGregor, Douglas, Fassbender in Soderbergh's 'Knockout'

Steven Soderbergh promised to surround mixed martial artist Gina Carano with strong actors for her feature debut when he first spoke about his revenge spy movie “Knockout,” and he is now delivering the goods.

Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor and Michael Douglas are in negotiations to join the cast of the production, which is being financed by Relativity.

Written by Lem Dobbs, the story sees a female spy (Carano) working for a Blackwater-style security contractor who is betrayed by one of her teammates.

McGregor would play the owner of the company, a one-time confidant of Carano who switches allegiances.

Fassbender will play a British agent who teams up with Carano but proves untrustworthy while Douglas will play an American executive of McGregor’s company who works with her to take down the company.

The movie is scheduled to go before cameras in February in several locations around the world and will be selling at the European Film Market in Berlin. Lionsgate is distributing the movie domestically.

Fassbender, repped by WME, is coming off Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” where he played Lt. Archie Hicox. McGregor, repped by WME and United Agents, next appears in Roman Polanski’s “The Ghost Writer” while WME-repped Douglas, who worked with Soderbergh on the Oscar-winning “Traffic,” wrapped “Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps” last month.

Pretty decent cast for this as well.

Ewan McGregor, Dennis Quaid, Michael Douglas and Michael Fassbender.

At first I thought this was another of his smaller films like the Girlfriend Experience but looks like it might turn out OK, depending on Gina's acting.

Wow, an ass-kicking female that's actually hot. This will be the first Soderbergh i've looked forward to see since SOLARIS. I think he should throw in Sasha Grey into the film as well.

Soderbergh, at least in planning, never ever disappoints.

Channing Tatum and Michael Angarano are in negotiations to join Steven Soderbergh's all-star cast of "Knockout," the revenge spy movie he's directing for Relativity.

The script by Lem Dobbs centers on a spy (mixed martial artist Gina Carano) who works for a Blackwater-style security contractor and is betrayed by one of her teammates.

Tatum, who will train with a Mossad agent in preparation for the part, will play one of the agents in her spy cell. Angarano plays a teen who sees Carano in trouble and decides to help, unwittingly ending up as her partner.

The two join Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor and Dennis Quaid in the production, which begins shooting next month.

The movie will take advantage of tax incentives and rebates in Spain and Ireland to make the most of its $25 million budget.

Following "Knockout," Tatum will shoot Dito Montiel's crime thriller "Son of No One" with Robert De Niro. The actor, repped by UTA and Management 360, next appears in Lasse Hallstrom's "Dear John" and has "The Eagle of the Ninth," directed by Kevin Macdonald, in the can.

UTA-repped Angarano, who appeared in David Gordon Green's "Snow Angels," recently wrapped production on Max Winkler's romantic comedy "Ceremony" with Uma Thurman.

Wow, nothing like a good way to goon up your movie with Channing Tatum. Didn't anyone see the trailer to his Amanday Seyfried "Notebook" film? He's a bad actor period.

According to IMDB, this is now called Haywire, will be released in 2011 (currently in post-production), and co-stars Antonio Bandaras and Bill Paxton, in addition to the names listed above.

She's always been one cauliflower ear away from losing her Hollywood potential. Makes sense for her to walk away from fighting while she's at the top of her game in order to pursue acting/modeling.

Yeah and that movie sucked and it had a lot to do with a terrible acting from the main star. We'll see how far Gina can stretch her acting.

That and there's no way in hell she'll ever beat Cyborg. Might as well cash in when you can.
