Disney Buys Marvel Entertainment

How will this effect upcoming Marvel movies, if at all...

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Walt Disney Co. said Monday it is acquiring Marvel Entertainment Inc. for $4 billion in cash and stock, bringing characters like Iron Man and Spider-Man into the family of Mickey Mouse and WALL-E.
Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of 5,000 Marvel characters. Many of them, including favorites such as the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, were co-created by the comic book legend Stan Lee.
Disney said Marvel shareholders will receive $30 per share in cash, plus 0.745 Disney shares for every Marvel share they own. That values each Marvel share at $50 based on Friday's closing stock prices.
Marvel shares jumped $10.09, or 26 percent, to $48.74 in trading before the market opened. Disney shares fell 70 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $26.14.
Disney said the boards of both companies have approved the transaction, but it will require an antitrust review and the approval of Marvel shareholders.
Disney CEO Robert Iger said the acquisition combines Marvel's "strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters" with Disney's "unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties" and ability to maximize value across multiple platforms and territories.

Ive only seen 4 movies in the past 15 years in theaters that bear the evil Disney Logo. How i hate them so.
This better not effect the content of the Marvel films.

I liked Bad Santa, Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2, and Gangs of New York amongst their other releases.

Holy shit. I know WB owns DC, but for so long Marvel has been prided for not being a corporate machine. Wow.

Re: Disney Buys Marvel Entertainment

Does this mean Pixar can do a Spiderman or Hulk flick?

This really is a little sad, especially since Marvel had done so well to branch out and start their own film house, which has been very successful.

Exactly, right as they are getting control of their characters in other media, and getting films in line, they do this. Sigh.

I feel the same way. I just hope the possibilities of that shared universe they have been working towards aren't flushed away. If we are lucky, maybe they can get Spider-man and X-Men back this way . . . somehow with Disney money.

Re: Disney Buys Marvel Entertainment

Is there any advantage of Disney owning Marvel? Better storylines? More superhero movies? Anything?

Re: Disney Buys Marvel Entertainment

Well, I don't think it's an issue that we would see "less R-rated Marvel films", because most Marvel superheros don't need a R-Rating except for Punisher, which already have three R-rated film versions which all suck. Disney makes pretty decent PG-13 flicks (Pirates of the Caribbean).

What about releasing Marvel cartoons on DVD? Would Disney more likely get those cartoons out faster to the public?

Joey Q can now eat his words, and kiss Disneys ass, after his 'AOL-Comics' stab he took at DC.

From an update on Ain't It Cool:

John Lasseter met with Marvel last week about a possible team-up between Marvel and Pixar and got "pretty excited, pretty fast." They say there's definitely an opportunity there.

As a VG nerd, I'd love to see a Marvel or X-Men world in the next Kingdom Hearts game.

Re: Disney Buys Marvel Entertainment

I mentioned this in the Comic Book thread, but I wouldn't mind seeing Marvel themed rides at Disneyland. Looks like the movies will go until their contracts run out; hard to imagine Marvel/Disney will renew any of them when they expire though. Curious what the rival studios will do as they may rush to get out some shitty movies before the contracts are up.
