"Yellow Submarine" 3D remake slated for 2012 (Disney/Zemeckis)

Oh joy...

Disney and Robert Zemeckis (”Polar Express”) will remake the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” animated film in 3-D, according to Variety. The new version of the 1968 classic is aiming for a 2012 release.

The original is such a project of its period that I can't see it working nowadays.

Do they mean they're going to take the original film and make it 3D, or is this a full-on remake. If it's the latter, will it be cell animation or CGI?

This will play well in my house. Hopefully the "shareholders" are intimately involved and it stands up to the tradition.

Judging that it's Zemeckis, I think it will be motion capture animation.

I'm the biggest Beatles nerd on the planet. That having been said...

... I fucking *loathe* "Yellow Submarine". The movie, not the song. Great look, great songs, the movie puts me to sleep EVERY TIME I WATCH IT.

Bring on the remake. Yeah, it'll suck like the rest of Zemeckis's creepy mo-cap bullshit, but I guarantee it'll be more interesting to watch.

I wonder why they chose Mo-Cap? Its not gonna be the Beatles playing the Beatles. The movie is gonna be more about the visuals anyways. Why not just make it full blown animated?

Becuase he still likes the style of an actor becoming a character and making it their own. I don't see the big deal with this, it's not like the Beatles voiced their characters in the original.

They can't really make the character their own because it's a real person. In the end its still gonna be one of the Beatles. I just see motion capture as limiting the film overall. Trying to bring realism to Yellow Submarine just seems like a bad idea. Could you imagine the original if the Beatles were all drawn really real? They wouldn't fit in with the rest of the movie. It had a cohesive style.

I'd rather they leave the original alone than try to apply some fake 3D process to it. At least this will get us a BD of that version.

I think Zemeckis just got inspired by seeing footage of the Rock Band game.

What is it with Zemeckis and motion capture? I hate it.

Each one? There was only one Beatles film between Hard Day's Night and Yellow Submarine, Help. I refute your claim of being the second biggest Beatles nerd on the planet!

Yes and no. The charactures of The Beatles are just emphasized versions of one portion of their personalities (George being the eastern obsessed hippie, Paul being the cute ladies man, etc). It's not like the original offered any insight into who The Beatles were.

It was the 60's, man.
Maybe if you watch it while on acid.

I love how people are commenting on the look of this film before a single frame is shot or anyone has even said how it's going to be made.

It says how it will be made in the article:

The studio has been quietly brokering a complicated rights deal that would give Zemeckis access to 16 original Beatles songs for a movie he will direct in the performance-capture 3-D digital production format he employed for “A Christmas Carol.”
