I'm helping a friend put together a DD (and possible DTS) system.

My task -- at least the one that's giving me problems -- is to find a pre-amp/processor for under $700. DTS would be nice, but not at the cost of sacrificing sound quality, especially in stereo.

I'm wondering if I'm going to be able to beat getting a refurbed Marantz AV-550 (DD only) for $400. Any ideas, suggestions where to look, etc.?

Thanks not only in advance, but I will actually respond here and thank you. In other words, I'm not one of those ask-a-question-and-not-come-back-to-check-the-answer types.

Thanks. Checking it out now.

I doubt I can get my friend to buy used stuff. Other than from me, that is.

Check out Outlaw Audio's new receiver that can be used as a pre-amp. It's got 6.1 decoding in both dolby and dts.

Outlaw has developed a great reputation for high quality amps, I have yet to see a review for this receiver though.
