What I mean is that do you ever watch the film that influenced another film?

I tend to do this with Tarantino films for sure. I'm a Godard fan now cuz of him. Kill Bill alone added soooo many films to my library. Edgar Wright as well does it. I never saw Point Break till it was made such a big deal in Hot Fuzz. And with Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds coming out I'm about to see The Dirty Dozen. I mean I'm sure not every film that has influenced another film, hell the original Inglourious Basterds isn't all that great..it can be entertaining but it's not amazing. I just wondered if any of you guys did the same thing. I find it entertaining at times, though sometimes I'm just horrified to see wtf was taken from "film X" and made to good use in "film Y".

When I was a teen I rented A Clockwork Orange because I had read it was an influence on Natural Born Killers.

It wasn't what I expected at all, and became one of my favorite films while NBK has mostly faded from my mind.

yes, every movie. But on a serious note, and what I think the original post is getting at, is what film were you surprised by its influence from other films?

For example, I just watched Lawrence of Arabia for the first time recently, and I couldn't believe how much it literally influenced Steven Spielberg - especially with his Indiana Jones. If I only knew of the director David Lean and not Spielberg, I would have thought that he obviously directed the Indiana Jones films.

In the '80s, I enjoyed discovering movies made long before RAIDERS in which the hero wore a brown leather jacket and a fedora. SECRET OF THE INCAS (1953) had Charlton Heston in Indy garb on a treasure hunt in South America, not unlike the opening of RAIDERS. In HONG KONG (1951), it was Ronald Reagan in the Indy outfit, this time in war-torn China, not unlike scenes in, I think, TEMPLE OF DOOM.

Just watched Cronenberg's Shivers this weekend for the first time. Apparently it has influenced any number of films that followed - The Hidden, Slither ..or any other film that has a similar "bathtub" scene, perhaps even the campy cult classic, Night of the Creeps.

I love finding old films that arguably have had an influence on so many others ...

you Scorsese fans should check out Touch Of Evil by Orson Welles to see the original long tracking shots. the opening four minutes are considered by many to be the greatest in history.

When I watched Ghost in the shell for the first time, I couldn't believe how many ideas the Matrix took from that movie. That had to be a direct influence for the Wachowki brothers.

Oddly enough...they're both from Bollywood. An homage is a form of respect or reverence to a person/object/etc. So it's like Danny Butterman and Nicholas Angel (from Hot Fuzz) diving through the air with two handguns going off....like Chow Yun Fat in many of the John Woo flicks. It's a tribute or nod to a flick that they liked and they did it here too but a bit differently. Again there's some quick and crazy editing in a scene from Hot Fuzz that's very much like what Tony Scott does now. A priest has 2 pistols extend and pop out from his sleeves ala Desperado. These are homages. The Bollywood stuff up there are ripoffs.

I recently saw Disturbia. A pretty entertaining flick that was very obviously influenced (I guess you can even call it a remake or reimaging) of Rear Window.

And if you ever saw the Matrix then you have to say yes to this question. So many movies "payed homage" to the Matrix after it made it big it's gotten to the point where the Matrix has almost become a parody of itself.
