Weekend box-office (7/24-7/26) : The Pigs dethrone the wizard
Didn't expect "G-Force" to do quite this well. And just goes to show you that mostly negative reviews doesn't hurt a rom-com ("The Ugly Truth"). I hope "Public Enemies" reaches 100M. And look at "The Hangover" go!

G-Force made $32m in one day?
Did NOT see that coming...
Ugly Truth did $26m on Fri alone? Orphan did $14m? These sound more like weekend projections than single-day figures. Box-office is really booming this weekend, so it would seem.
Edit: Ok, just checked BOM. These must be weekend estimates. If G-Force had made more than Watchmen opening weekend I would have cried. Whew!

Friday:
* Ranked by selected day. Click on the day at the top of the chart to sort by that day.
Notes for this weekend so far:
#2 The Ugly Truth will likely be #3 behind Potter after Saturday.
(500) Days of Summer added 58 (85 total) theaters and was up 91.9% Friday-to-Friday. What's more impressive? It's the summer movie season and (500) Days of Summer, which is only on 85 screens, is just outside of the top 10.
Bruno lost 864 theaters (now at 1895) and was down another 68% Friday-to-Friday
Potter was down 65% Friday-to-Friday, had this opened last Friday and not last Wednesday - this would be expected - but since it wasn't a Friday opening this is actually quite high. Some are surely waiting for the IMAX 3D edition to re-watch it, that comes out Wednesday.
Orphan, a movie that has been sitting on the shelf for well over a year now, is about on par for a Dark Castle picture -- Their last horror picture, The Reaping, opened to $10m en route to $25m total. House of Wax opened to $12m. Ghost Ship opened to $11m. Gothika ($12m opening), 13 Ghosts to $15m and their biggest opening was House on Haunted Hill (1999) with around $16m.
To note, G-Force is the second #1 opening for Zach Galifianakis this year (behind The Hangover). Sure, he isn't the star, but why not spin it a little
The Proposal took down this summer's Terminator Salvation and has now taken down last summer's The Incredible Hulk.
The Hurt Locker gained 144 theaters (238 currently) and was up 88.9% Friday-to-Friday.

I realize that but the first post of these threads is typically just Friday numbers unless otherwise stated. It is the summer after all, so I could maybe see something terrible like G-Force getting good numbers, though $32m is highly unlikely.

I'm curious to how today's numbers will reflect. I'm hoping The Ugly Truth was just very front loaded, but I also know that this country has no taste.

Re: Weekend box-office (7/24-7/26) : The Pigs dethrone the wizard
The projected total gross for Public Enemies is incorrect. It had earned almost $84 million after Thursday. So the total is going to be around $88.5 mil. I wonder if it's going to be able to squeak out another $11.5 mil? I thought this would top out at $90m, but it's hanging on a little better.
Universal hasn't had a great Summer, so they need this to get to the century mark. They had 4 $100+mil grossers last Summer. They have 0 this Summer. Fast and Furious, a Spring release, is their only $100+mil film. They're the Fox of '09.

I honestly didn't start seeing commercials for G-Force until just the other day. It looked like some sort of crappy mid-summer kids movie like that Aliens in the Attic coming out next week.

I think Fox is still the Fox of '09, although I'll agree Universal has had some clunkers.

Wolverine $179m
Night at the Museum 2 $172m
Ice Age 3 $165m
Taken $145m
A huge improvement over last year.
And they have Avatar this December.

The films I want to see this week are 500 Days of Summer and The Hurt Locker which look much better than the wide releases that opened this week.

Hope to see Bruno on dvd and Blu-Ray soon. Hopefully these lower than expected numbers will help to hurry them up and put it out. Can't wait to watch it again.
