This was the reason why Malcolm Mcdowell got the part of Alex in a Clocwork Orange (one of my favorite films.) Reportedly also one of Stanley Kubrick's favorite films. A classic film that just gets better every time I see it.

Titanic (1997)
Its this little movie staring Leonardo DiCaprio & Kate Winslet. Its pretty good.

Privilege (Peter Watkins, 1967)
Model Shop (Jacques Demy, 1969)

Privilege is a creepy look at a dystopian Britain where the government and the church have conspired to create a pop star and his his popularity to brainwash the youth of the country into a compliant, nationalist fervor. It's much better than I could possibly describe. Model Shop, the only movie Demy made in America, is a story of a guy who was just given his draft notice and who wanders around L.A. trying to decide what to do. He ends up meeting a mysterious woman who is a lost as he.

Hardcore - George C. Scott's daughter disappears on a church trip, so he goes out West to find her. He encounters all kinds of sleaze until the film's (kinda) surprising twist.

Electra Glide in Blue - Robert Blake plays a short cop looking to be a big man. One motherfucker of an ending, too.

I, Madman - Tibor Takacs (who did The Gate) directed this tale of a book bringing some sinister creations to life. Awesome FX work here.

Ace in the Hole

Excellent 1951 Billy Wilder film starring Kirk Douglas as an opportunistic self-loathing reporter who'll do anything for a scoop. Its one of those pictures that makes you despair of the human race, but too engrossing to take your eyes off of right up to the very last (fantastic) shot.

Too Much Sleep (1997) has stuck with me in the ten years since I've seen it. It's a pretty low-key night of weirdness in New Jersey.

But a film I consider to be an astonishing masterpiece that I had no idea existed was Josef Von Sternberg's Anatahan (1953) aka The Saga of Anatahan.

Borzage's 'Strange Cargo'.

The Medusa Touch (1978) with Richard Burton & Lee Remick.

Riveting thriller about a detective (Lino Ventura) who investigates a brutal beating that causes the victim (Richard Burton) to a coma. The detective discovers why the man was bludgeoned almost to the point of death when he finds out that the victim is evil incarnate & has tremendous telekinetic powers. The scene were the a jumbo jet flies into a skyscraper is eerily realistic.

Saw this many, many years ago and enoyed it. I just recently ordered the Special Edition DVD from Amazon.uk.

Sony is releasing Model Shop on DVD in September. Sounds interesting, I will probably pick it up in the next DD sale.

Hmmm....Well one of my Favorites would be The Ruling Class. Terrifically enjoyable.
And i just watched something last night called Mr. Freedom. Enjoyed the hell out of that one. Ballsy satire that is one of the best aged movies Ive ever seen.

Those are both great. And yeah, Electra has one hell of an ending, shit comes out of nowhere. Have to see I, Madman, hopefully for Halloween.

I'll throw in Cutter's Way. One of Jeff Bridges' most underrated performances, great supporting turn from John Heard too. Made in 1981, but clearly one of the last great movies of the 70's.

In the Spirit with Elaine May and Marlo Thomas, a surprisingly great onscreen duo. Very charming, New Age-y little comedy with a slightly involving mystery. Some great lines and a lot of endearing wackiness, especially when May & Thomas head to an abandoned spiritual retreat in upstate New York. Peter Falk, Melanie Griffith, and Olympia Dukakis have small character roles.

It hasn't been released on DVD, but it's one of my favorite unknown gems.

So far, the only "unknown" movies I've come across in this thread are I, MADMAN and TOO MUCH SLEEP.

(Some of the others, e.g. IN THE SPIRIT, sound like they really should be unknown.)

Interstate 60

Came out in 2003 or 2004. Writen and directed by the writer of Back to the Future. If you like BTTF you'll like this. Low budget but it has a very clever and smart script and it's full of top actors.

Another one would be Blast of Silence. Wonderful noir with the best voice over I've heard.

Plus, one of the most riveting peanut-races in the history of cinema.
