Box Office Weekend (7/3-7/5): Manny vs Prime... ends in a tie!!!! (@ $42.5M a piece)

'Transformers,' 'Ice Age' tie at boxoffice
By Carl DiOrio
July 5, 2009, 02:06 PM ET

The weekend battle for boxoffice supremacy remains caught in a haze of holiday fireworks.

Paramount's effects-driven actioner "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and Fox's 3D animated family threequel "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" each posted weekend grosses estimated at $42.5 million pending today's final studio numbers. The "Transformers" sequel -- produced by Paramount, DreamWorks and Hasbro -- fell 61% in its second weekend for $293.5 million in cumulative boxoffice through 12 days of domestic release.

"Ice Age" boasts a $67.5 million cume since bowing Wednesday. Universal's Johnny Depp starrer "Public Enemies" finished the three-day Fourth of July session in third place with $26.2 million in weekend boxoffice, capping a five-day debut of $41 million.

Both wide openers performed roughly as anticipated, so the tight race for No. 1 represented a modest underperformance by the "Transformers" sequel through the competitive holiday frame.

Transformers 2 is a few days away from the $300M mark.

Star Trek is one day away from passing the $250M mark.

The Hangover passes the $200M mark.

Land of the Lost (#18 w/ $293k take) won't even find $50M.

Did anyone expect "The Proposal" to do this well? At this rate it looks like it could do in the 120-140M range.

I didn't. I guess I have to get used to seeing more Ryan Reynolds.

With "Manny" in the thread title, at first I was pleasantly surprised that Public Enemies did that well. I had forgotten the names of the Ice Age characters.

This has been an interesting summer at the box office so far. TF2 will hit $300m today, more than likely. ST hitting $250m is pretty rad. I'm willing to bet once final numbers come out Ice Age pulls off the win. I think a family film like that will get better Sun numbers than TF2.

I called it. Star Trek out of the top 10 this weekend. Still, an amazing run.

Interstingly enough, according to Showbizdata, though out for the entire weekend, Star Trek was at #10 on Sunday, beating out NATM.

'Transformers' edges past 'Ice Age'

Updated studio estimates Monday made it pretty clear who was No. 1 in the photo-finish race for boxoffice supremacy this weekend, with Paramount's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" topping the domestic pack with $42.4 million.

Final official data from Nielsen EDI will be released midday Monday. But morning updates from various studios consistently showed Fox's "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" in second place with less than $42 million in Friday-Sunday boxoffice. On Sunday, both Par and Fox estimated their pics had taken in a chart-topping $42.5 million in boxoffice over the three-day Fourth of July frame.

Sunday estimates showed the "Transformers" sequel toting a $293.5 million cume for its first 12 days in domestic release. The "Ice Age" three-quel boasted a $67.5 million cume since unspooling Wednesday.

Another film opening wide during the most recent session -- Universal's Johnny Depp starrer "Public Enemies" -- rung up $26.2 million for the weekend and $41 million since its Wednesday bow.

From Variety...

Paramount’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” won the July 4th weekend race at the domestic B.O. over 20th Century Fox’s 3-D toon “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.”

“Transformers 2” grossed roughly $42.4 million from 4,234 runs, while “Ice Age” grossed $41.6 million from 4,099 runs, according to preliminary numbers released Monday morning.

On Sunday, weekend estimates showed the two tentpoles ending the weekend in a dead-heat at $42.5 million each.

“Transformers 2”s” domestic cume through Sunday--its 12th day in release--was a massive $293.6 million.

“Ice Age 3’s” cume through Sunday was $66.6 million. Toon opened last Wednesday.

Weekend numbers may be adjusted slightly when final grosses are posted midday.

Those are good numbers for Public Enemies. They can thank Depp for that.

Sunday has always been Trek's biggest day. No idea why.

Re: Box Office Weekend (7/3-7/5): Manny vs Prime... ends in a tie!!!! (@ $42.5M a pie

I'll be the first to say it, this weekend was disappointing. Huge takes for both Transformers and Ice Age on a worldwide scale, but nothing too hot domestically. Just looking at the past few years during this weekend...

2009: $155,486,083 ( Transformers 2 / Ice Age 3 / Public Enemies )
2008: $153,192,058 ( Hancock / Wall-E / Wanted )
2007: $165,449,282 ( Transformers / Ratatouille / Live Free or Die Hard)
2006: $143,676,704 ( Superman Returns / Devils Wears Prada / Click )

[The years consist of that weekend's top twelve films' grosses.]

So this weekend made $2 million more than last year's with two already established franchises whereas last year's had two original stories and a graphic novel adaptation --- and not nearly as much as two years ago (consisting of Transformers, an original story, and a sequel that a lot of people never asked for).

Not that impressive.

This upcoming weekend will be the biggest test for Transformers if it can make it to $400 million. The first film had consecutive weekend drops from 40-45%. If the sequel drops anywhere higher than 50% (which may be a huge possibility at this point), it will not have the legs to make it to $400 million. Good riddance, but next weekend will determine it's ultimate fate.

The same goes for Ice Age, the film is getting (much) better reviews than it's last outing, but if it drops more than 50%, the film will not have legs to coast it through the summer (not a good sign considering it's the last, big animated family movie of the summer).

I'm curious to see how much Bruno will take in next weekend. Word of mouth and press is running high at this moment and I'm curious to see if it'll do more than $40-45 million next weekend.

TF2 is about $20 million ahead of Pirates 2: Dead Man's Chest, which is a comparable release, after 12 days. DMC dropped 54% during weekend 2, but didn't drop over 50% the rest of the way. I don't expect TF2 to have better holds than DMC, nor to get to that film's $423 mil US take. If it drops 50% during the week, I think it'll add about $25 million, which would put it at around $318 mil before the weekend. If it holds to 50% for next weekend, that would give it about $339 mil.

Assuming that all works out, can it add $61 mil the rest of the way, especially with Potter showing up next week?

To be fair, TF2 did get a head start since it opened last week. If it opened this week with Ice Age 3 and Public Enemies the total weekend gross would have been much higher.

Same thing similar happened to TF1 when it first opened (it opened the Monday prior to it's first weekend).

If everyone "loves" this film, why did it drop 61% in it's second weekend? Just throwing that out there. Even big blockbusters that have great WOM don't drop that big on a second weekend.

actually they do when it releases on a wednesday the week before. the movie will rest at about $420 million domestically when all said and done. people liked it to make that kind of dough.

No it won't. Analysts had it pegged at $300 million on Sunday. Didn't make it there. If it makes less than $7 million yesterday, won't hit that point until today.

Transformers is going to have a hell of a time to make it to $400 million. If it drops more than 50% this upcoming weekend, it won't make it. Especially with Harry Potter coming out in eight days.

it will make $50 million more until potter hits. then it will limp there. eight days is a long ways since it has no competition this weekend. it will cross over $400m. guaranteed. remember this post.
