Is this the worst year for movies ever?

Watchmen & Star Trek are great but that has been about it. Almost all of the "Summer Blockbusters" are horrible. Transformers 2 is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Even calling it a movie is being kind. I believe Micheal Bay was molested by an explosion as a child.

Terminator was alright.
Wolverine was okay at best.

I have hope for Inglorious Basterds and Shutter Island but it has been a lackluster year at best and I just read they are expanding the best picture category to 10. Good luck Hollywood filling that many great films in there, they should break it up to Drama and Comedy and give them 5 each. Comedy has been getting the shaft for too long. Sorry about that little rant. Is this the worst year ever for movies?

Re: Is this the worst year for movies ever?

Nope, not even close.

This year hasn't been great but we got Taken, Brothers Bloom, Moon, Drag Me To Hell, The Hurt Locker, Star Trek, Hangover, Up, and there are plenty more coming out including Public Enemies, Inglourious Basterds, The Box, Shutter Island, A Serious Man (Coen Bros), etc;

Thankfully though, I wasn't anticipating much this summer, so it isn't a repeat of 2007 when we had the terrible trio of threequels (Pirates 3, Shrek 3, Spider-man 3).

Ninja Assassin (okay, no trailer yet).

I've seen worse years in both what has come out and potential.

Are you kidding? This year is so good that the Academy had to add 5 more spots for Best Picture.

Re: Is this the worst year for movies ever?

I think it certainly has potential to be quite a bit better than last year.
Its ok so far. Watchmen, Outlander, Star Trek, were the 3 most enjoyable films I have seen but i have confidence in things like Inglourous Basterds, Public Enemies, FUnny People, The Boat that ROcked, Nine, Antichrist, SHutter Island, The Box, Michael Moore's new Documentary, The Road, The WOlf Man, and others could be worthwhile.

Re: Is this the worst year for movies ever?

As is frequently the case when evaluating an art form--particularly a commercial art form--there are many things to consider. For instance, are you restricting yourself to mainstream, tentpole movies? I ask, because the OP only cited those kinds of movies. Others have already cited less marketed fare that pleased them, and I suspect there are more such gems awaiting us. And, really, such discussions take place each year and have since people began paying attention to movies. Surely, someone in 1966 must have remarked, "Batman was the same kind of thing we see on TV, there's no new Bond movie this year's Godzilla is going straight to TV. Why bother going out?" And, of course, there were plenty of "good" films released that year. It was simply a matter of looking for them, as it has been (and will be) this year.

Re: Is this the worst year for movies ever?

I'd say it's a fair year, with a lackluster summer.

I've seen some really good films this year and some real stinkers. This summer isn't nearly as exciting as 2007 or 2008 was for me.

Way too soon to say that. Seems pretty much like every year to me. Summer junk, and the majority of the real films coming out in November/December.

Re: Is this the worst year for movies ever?

It's definitely been disappointing in terms of how many of the big releases have sucked, but Watchmen, Star Trek and Up all made up for in quality what's been lacking in quantity. I also still have high hopes for Public Enemies, Bruno, Harry Potter, Funny People, District 9, Inglourious Basterds, 9, Shutter Island, Where the Wild Things Are, The Road, The Box, The Wolfman, Avatar and Sherlock Holmes.

I agree with this... despite a few great movies (Star Trek, Up, Drag Me to Hell, Hangover) this summer has been very weak and we're only at July and it's getting pretty dry already (still looking forward to Public Enemies, Bruno, Harry Potter and Inglourious Basterds but that's only 4 movies over 2 months)... although I should mention that my favourite movie of the year is coming out on July 17: (500) Days of Summer. Go see it.

Re: Is this the worst year for movies ever?

I wouldn't call it the worst year for movies, but it definitely is a lackluster summer. There have been some good hits, but overall my excitement level has been much lower than usual. There are, and have been, films I look forward to watching but none that have me foaming at the mouth. I also think that it's hard to top the frenzy whipped up last year by Iron Man, a new Indiana Jones movie and Ledger's Joker.

Re: Is this the worst year for movies ever?

Fuq no.

We still have 6 more months of movies to find out.

I think there's plenty of possible good movies later this year, such as The Hurt Locker, Shutter Island (Scorsese), The Green Zone (Greengrass), The Wolfman, Invictus (Eastwood), The Lovely Bones (Jackson), Avatar, Nine, The Informant (Soderbergh), and The Road.

Ninja Assassin (okay, no trailer yet).

I've seen worse years in both what has come out and potential.

2006 was the year that gave us great classics like Larry the Cable Guy Health Inspector, Snakes on a Plane and Basic Instinct 2.

I also think that it's hard to top the frenzy whipped up last year by Iron Man, a new Indiana Jones movie and Ledger's Joker.
I just don't get why Marvel didn't push for more releases this year. We have to wait till 2010 for Iron Man 2, new Spiderman, Thor, Capt. America and so on....

Re: Is this the worst year for movies ever?

I guess it depends on what movies you want to see. In terms of "Oscar worthy" movies, well I guess there haven't been a ton. But in terms of fun "popcorn" movies, well I certainly have enjoyed Wolverine, Terminator, Taken, Pink Panther, Watchmen, Night at the museum, and I plan on seeing Transformers tomorrow. Now I know that that isn't an impressive list of movies to some people ( and I know a lot of people hated most of those movies) but I loved them and have definitely enjoyed the movies this year.

I think it has indeed been rather putrid so far (except for Coraline & Adventureland which nobody has even mentioned so I guess they aren't that popular), but the second half of the year may redeem the first most of my most anticipated films haven't even come out yet. Daybreakers looks awesome, 9, Where the Wild Things Are, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Ninja Assassin, District 9, Zombieland, The Road, at least form me are all more anticipated than any supposed Blockbusters this summer.

Re: Is this the worst year for movies ever?

I've made 13 trips to theaters this year to see current movies. I've only liked two. One was a Bollywood kung fu movie. The other was CRANK: HIGH VOLTAGE. The other eleven included many high-profile films that were either huge hits (UP, STAR TREK), sleeper hits (TAKEN, HANGOVER) or just hugely hyped (WATCHMEN). And, in one case, an Oscar winner (SLUMDOG). Plus one highly anticipated film seen last night at an advance screening that turned out to be a big disappointment (PUBLIC ENEMIES).

I don't know that it's the worst year for movies ever, though. Some of the films I didn't like pleased an awful lot of other people. It's just that they're either not making movies for me or when they are (e.g. PUBLIC ENEMIES, TAKEN, PUSH), they simply botch the job. But it has been an interesting year.

This year has been pretty middle-of-the-road so far for me. I've seen 7 movies in the theater, and I've loved 3 (Gran Torino, I Love You, Man, & The Hangover), thought 2 were "just okay" (The International & Terminator: Salvation), and hated 2 (Observe & Report and The Watchmen).

Technically, Gran Torino is a 2008 release.

If we are talking worst year for movies period, well we still have a half a year to go and most of the good ones, don't comeout until the fall and winter, so, it's kinda early to tell at this point.

But if we are talking worst year for summer blockbusters, I would agree, one of the worst I can remember.

It's a little early to be asking ourselves if this is a bad (let alone the worst) year for film. It is entirely possible that, like 2008, this year can turn out incredibly top-heavy. Kind of a dumb thread to be posted barely six months into the year.
