Early reports have Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen grossing $16 million in midnight screenings today, nearing the same as Attack of the Clones four years ago, but not beating The Dark Knight's $18.5 million from last July.

Could it do $100 million in two days like the Batman or will Thursday's numbers drop?

I imagine Friday night's take will be pretty freakin' huge. I'm guessing a huge drop for next weekend.

Today will be huge, tomorrow smaller, Friday huge, Sat and Sun smaller. Bad word of mouth will kill of potential Thursday sales but Friday people will come out to watch it and bad word of mouth will kill it for the weekend. This should be an interesting thread.

Most thought this would easily coast to $300 million. Now I'm not so sure. It may get there, but it may creep past it. I guess it depends on the drop next weekend. It has a little while before HP arrives.

Also, I have to say, for every one person saying how much it sucked, you've got someone saying it's better than the first film, so I don't think we can expect the public reception to be unanimous.

Very true - Last night I saw that Transformers 2 was trending on Twitter when I got home from the midnight show, expecting to see comments about it being a letdown... but most of the tweets were "Transformers 2 was AMAZZZZZZING!" So I think word of mouth will be fine and people don't want to believe this will suck, so they'll see it anyhow.

My co-worker is going tonight. He enjoyed the first one (for a popcorn flick) and we usually tend to agree on films. However, he said Wolverine was good and my other friends said that was utterly painful and somewhere between X2 and X3. Given the proximity to Transformers 2 I may have to take his feedback tomorrow with a grain of salt. Either way I probably won't have a chance to go until next weekend.

Seriously. One can only hope. But it's a losing battle.

The thing about Transformers, is that good or bad, it's the type of movie you just have to see on the big screen.

I'm going in expecting it to blow chunks, yet my ass will be in the theater seat Saturday night...and I didn't even like the first one all that much.
