Re: "Favorite" Artist Tournament: Opening Round/Group #2

I am shocked so few people have ever heard of Parliament/Funkadelic. I thought the whole world knew who George Clinton was. He did a free concert in Louisville last year and 100,000 people turned up. I thought everyone knew Maggot Brain and Tear The Roof Off The Sucker.

Same goes with Kraftwerk. Pretty much every electronic artist owes a debt to them, I thought everyone knew Trans Europe Express.

Abstain from all. Obviously my musical tastes are not as ecclectic as I'd like to think.

Duran Duran
Eurythmics (though I KNOW that Louis has contributed far more to music)
abstain (never heard any UFO that I know of)
Janis Joplin
Conway Twitty
Kraftwerk (I'm a big '70s-'80s synth-head, so they are like gods)
Frank Zappa, though a tough choice
The Police (can't stand Van Morrison)

Duran Duran
Louis Armstrong
Abstain - I never heard UFO (clunky 70's AOR metal?), but I hated Live during their thankfully brief popularity.
Aimee Mann
Big Star - "I never travel too far..."
Kraftwerk
P-Funk
Van Morrison

Re: "Favorite" Artist Tournament: Opening Round/Group #2

There are those who have idea who Aimee Mann or P-Funk are?? Oy.

Anyway, no big loves here but:

Ray Charles (easy)
Louis Armstrong (easy)
UFO (mostly indifferent, UFO has a slight edge)
Janis Joplin (LOVE Aimee Mann, but c'mon... this is JANIS man...)
*abstain*
Todd Rundgren (never liked Kraftwerk or almost all electronica, for that matter)
Frank Zappa (P-Funk is teh AWESOME but Frank is a Grand Master)
The Police

Well, since you brought it up...

For those not familiar with UFO (and it seems like there are quite a few that aren't), here's a good cross section of their stuff over a 20+ year span. If you like them, great, if not, vote for Live! (Or abstain...)

Re: "Favorite" Artist Tournament: Opening Round/Group #2

Ray Charles again, I think he is one of the best ever; I actually like Duran Duran but to me they aren't even close
Eurythmics=just not a big fan of Louis Armstrong, and the Eurythmics are ok
Live
Aimee Mann=slightly hard choice but overall I'd rather listen to Aimee Mann
Abstain, neither one really grabs me
Kraftwerk=Easy choice
Frank Zappa=by a hair, if I lose this one that's ok with me
The Police=Van's good but I like the Police more

Me three. I'm more than a bit stunned, actually.

Not trying to shit on anyone, but how could you not at least have heard of some of these artists, even if you've not heard any of their music? I, personally, am not necessarily overly familiar with the extensive works of Conway Twitty, Parliament/Funkadelic, Kraftwerk...etc - but at least I know who they are. Big Star...I can understand that one a little. It's a crime, but at least I get that they weren't entirely well known by everyone. And Amiee Mann? Perhaps you didn't realize she was also the singer for Til Tuesday, before she went solo? Surely at least some of you who don't know her, may at least be more familiar with them. Or maybe you saw the movie Magnolia - she did quite a bit of the music from the soundtrack.

No offense but that's just YOUR OPINION. Dismissing as "suck" IMO is unfair to Parliament, Zappa, Kraftwerk, Janis Joplin, Aimee Mann, The Police, Louis Armstrong, Van Morrison or Eurythmics/Annie Lennox. Some people think because something doesn't appeal to them that it's automatically bad. I don't consider myself a fan of Janis, Van or Louis in the least but to say they suck or have no talent is insulting to their catalogs.
