I always liked Fearless by Peter Weir, but it's not nearly as 'gooey' as Dreams.

The movie the director made before "What Dreams May Come" fits your description pretty well: "Map of the Human Heart." It has a similar mixture of interesting visuals and emotional wallops.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven
Lady in the Water
Both of those generally had bad reviews, but I liked them--had tears streaming down my face by the end of each.
They had a big impact on me--all about your place in the world, living up to your potential, finding a purpose for your existence, love in its various forms, etc..
Japanese, both by Akira Kurosawa:
Yume [a.k.a. Dreams]
Madadayo [Not Yet] (not as visual)
Some other Japanese movies:
Yomigaeri [Resurrection]
Wandafaru Raifu [Wonderful Life]
Satorare [Transparent]

Re: Films like "What Dreams May Come"
Hello,
thanks for all your recommendations.Have seen some of them and will check about the rest.
Recently tried to figure out the dvd details for the UK RC2 release of "Map of the human heart".I like the UK cover artwork
and would wanna go for it.The RC1 US release features deleted scenes, subtitles and other stuff but dunno about the UK release:
Yet i couldn't find any database and description info weither deleted scenes and subtitles are included in the UK RC2 release.
Edit:
OMG the UK version is a simple rip-off.No subtitles,no extras only chapter menu and DD2.0 english audio track.

After Life (Wandafuru raifu)
At a way station somewhere between heaven and earth, the newly dead are greeted by guides. Over the next three days, they will help the dead sift through their memories to find the one defining moment of their lives. The chosen moment will be re-created on film and taken with them when the dead pass on to heaven. This grave, beautifully crafted film reveals the surprising and ambiguous consequences of human recollection.

Passengers. Ann Hathaway. I know the review gods here didn't rate this movie very highly but if you like what dreams may come then you will like Passengers. Don't look too hard for breakdowns of this movie because alot of them tell you the plot. And that was the best secret through the movie. Ciao.

Also, while I'm probably very alone in this, I think the Steven Soderbergh version of Solaris is very good, and like The Fountain and WDMC fits into the category of "grief-stricken sci-fi/fantasy".

What immediately comes to mind is Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain, which I see some other posters have mentioned too.

Would it be possible to also list 'Heaven' and 'Life is Beautiful'- Maybe.

Absolutely.
