That's SIR Christopher Lee to you....

Christopher Lee to get knighthood

Published: June 12, 2009 at 10:56 PM

Christopher Lee, the 87-year-old British veteran of more than 200 movies, is to receive a knighthood, the government announced Friday.

The Queen's Birthday Honors list includes hundreds of people. They range from Lee and other celebrities to people who have demonstrated skill and caring in other walks of life, The Independent reported.

Esme Maxwell, is to receive an MBE for services to aviation. Maxwell, who works on the airport information desk in Belfast, used first aid to save a baby's life.

Lee -- who starred in a series of horror films as Dracula, Fu Manchu and other classic characters in the 1960s -- acquired a new generation of fans when he played Saruman in "The Lord of the Rings." He will be knighted for services to drama.

Two poets are on the list for knighthoods. Andrew Motion is the former poet laureate, while Christopher Ricks is retiring this year as a professor at Oxford.

Also up for a knighthood is Paul Grant, a head teacher who turned a school in Barking and Dagenham, Essex, from one of the worst in the country to one of the best.

No politicians made the cut this year, presumably fallout from the expenses scandal in Parliament, the report said.

Wow. For some reason I thought he was already knighted. Should have happened years ago but I'm glad he's finally getting his due.

Re: That's SIR Christopher Lee to you....

Well done, Sir Christopher! Fantastic actor with highly accomplished skills (fencing, etc.). Like Alec Guinness, Peter Cushing, etc., his presence always lends a classy air to any production. Loved seeing him get greater exposure in the latter stage of his career via mass market vehicles such as LOR & SW (even if the latter movies were disappointing).

We can just hope that he doesn't demand that his costars only address or refer to him by his peerage designation (a la Kingsley's "Sir Ben", which seems to be the required mode of address whenever his fellow actors discuss him in interviews & commentaries).

Great news. I hope I'll get the chance to meet him before he turns to dust and blows away. One of the best actors ever.

Re: That's SIR Christopher Lee to you....

As others have said, it should have happened years ago!! Did they really have to wait until the man was 87 years old?!

One of my earliest film recollections is of him as Dracula. Scared the s--t out of me! I grew up watching him and Peter Cushing become stars in Hammer movies and then prove their versatility in numerous other parts.

It's a well deserved honour, even if it is about 20 years late!

Re: That's SIR Christopher Lee to you....

I just went down Lee's filmography on IMDB and I counted 40 of his films that I've seen. Or, rather, that I remember seeing. A lot of those Fu Manchu and Italian horror films run together in my head these days and I can't recall which I've seen and which I haven't. I could have sworn there'd be more.
