i just saw John Carpenter's "Assault on Precinct 13" for the 1st time. and it was so good and so bad assed. i had a lot of fun. i mean when they
Spoiler:
just a fun fun ride.
i guess i am talking about the gritty, in-your-face, relentless, gasp-for-air kinda films that can come from many genres (horror, action, suspense, mystery, etc..).
so post your favorite bad ass movies that people should see before they die!

I don't remember VANISHING POINT being particularly "badass." I mean, it was really more of a counterculture film about Kowalski out-driving "the Man." All the hippies along the way loved him. So his car was souped-up, he was high on speed and he drove faster than the fuzz. That didn't make him badass. Esp. given the ending. And I find it hard to believe Eastwood's character in GRAN TURINO was at all based on Kowalski.
Don't forget, VANISHING POINT came out the same year as FRENCH CONNECTION, SHAFT and DIRTY HARRY, which starred, of course, Eastwood. Now the heroes of those films, Popeye Doyle, John Shaft and Harry Callahan, were what we considered "badass" back then. And Bruce Lee would show up on neighborhood screens two years later. Plus, we were seeing reissues of THE WILD BUNCH, THE DIRTY DOZEN and the Connery Bond films at the same time. So we were awash in "badass." Compare POINT BREAK to those dudes and see if they measure up. I didn't think so.

Yeah, I love Vanishing Point, but there is nothing "bad-ass" about it. It's not that type of movie.
Also, to me, bad-ass does not necessarily mean it has to be an action movie.
For example, an ultimate all-time bad-ass fiilm to me is . . .

Le Cercle Rouge is a good choice for that particular brand of terse, trenchcoated French criminal. The Day of the Jackal is similarly badass in the way it portrays the Jackal's meticulous, imperturbable, man-of-few-words preparations for assassination.
How about Shogun Assassin, a.k.a. the Lone Wolf & Cart series?
I have always found Road House, despite some lines of hilariously feeble dialogue spat with indignation by Swayze's character ("You are such an asshole, Wesley"), one of the ultimate "for men" movies. It doesn't get much more badass than Sam Elliot's grizzled, boozing legend of the bouncing trade, and the movie's just one long feast of brawling, boobs, and tit-for-tat vengeance. Not a great movie, objectively, but pure entertainment.
