Where's Waldo Movie

Taken from here

The Hollywood Reporter says that Universal Pictures has picked up the movie rights to the popular children's books series "Where's Waldo?" from Classic Media and is looking at making a live-action family film.

The book series was previously set up at Paramount and Nickelodeon, where John Schultz was attached to direct a script that had been worked on by screenwriters such as Adam Rifkin, Adam Cooper and Bill Collage.

The plot of that project revolved around Waldo, now 30, ending up traveling through time after accidentally activating a malfunctioning travel machine.
I don't know about you guys but I can't wait for the book adaptation!

Yeah, about 20 years too late there. Are the books still popular? I thought they were just a fad in the late 80's.

Re: Where's Waldo Movie

So it's not going to be 90 minutes of the audience staring at a slideshow of crowd scenes trying to find a man in a red and white striped shirt and toque?

This adaptation sounds silly to begin with, but it just sounds like Universal is buying the rights to use the phrase "Where's Waldo" and applying it in the loosest sense possible.

Is this what they mean when they say "safe" movie ideas?

Re: Where's Waldo Movie

Along with the board game adaptations of Monopoly and Battleship it seems like the studios are having a competition among themselves to see who can capitlize on the most dubious non-cinematic premise.

Re: Where's Waldo Movie

They should just make it some movie about Waldo who is an international spy/terrorist that is either planning some disaster or holds the key to stop a disaster. He doesn't trust anyone & is on the run. The movie's main characters chase him all over the world. Getting to where he was just after he takes off. Maybe they see glimpses of him as he runs through crowds that they loose him in. At the end, he drops the info they want & they stop the disaster or foil his plot. But they never catch him. The final shot is him watching them through binoculars as he yet again, goes on the run.

I for one CAN'T WAIT for this movie! I've been waiting for the last 20 years. I have all the books and have a where's Waldo costume. I go to the mall in costume at least 2'xs a month and just hide behind someone until someone points at me and yells "There he is!".

Didn't someone over the Monopoly thread come up with a mockup of a Hungry Hungry Hippos horror movie?

If it's anywere between Crank 1/2 and Death Race, I'd be all over that.

Re: Where's Waldo Movie

Yup, same sentiments RocShemp.

They need to do a movie for Simon, based in the clichéd dystopian future where people are forced to play Russian Roulette with the now-explosive Simon game device.

Cast Christopher Lambert, Kurtwood Smith, and Jeffrey Combs as your leads and you may have something there.
