Best film of 2009 so far?
For me, Watchmen hands down. Gran Torino technically shouldn't count, but it didn't open near me until January, so thats also up there. I have a feeling most of you are going to say Star Trek, which I liked, but wasn't blown away by. Watchmen was outstanding to me.

"Sin Nombre" and "Star Trek" are the two best films I've seen so far in 2009.

Of the movies i've seen so far, I would give the edge to Gran Torino over Star Trek.

Star Trek followed by Taken.
Neither had the greatest story but they were very well made and very entertaining.
On the other hand, Watchmen had a more intriguing story, but I didn't care for the execution. I wanted a movie, instead I got a re-enactment of the graphic novel panels.

Time Out New York hated 'Brothers Bloom' out of six stars, they gave it one... of course I find they are very hard to please.
2009 films that have five stars 'excellence' from me:
- Summer Hours
- Star Trek
- Departures
- Up
- Coraline

Reviews for Bloom have been decidedly mixed (movie is sitting @ 60% on rt, so 39 say don't see it, 58 say do.)

Best so far?
A toss-up between CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA and CRANK: HIGH VOLTAGE. Out of ten trips to theaters so far in 2009, those are the only ones I'd recommend.

Also, the aggregate is admittedly flawed because it removes the reviews of context. A lot of critics might rate Star Trek highly because they think it's a great summer movie - which it is - but may rank it very differently when compared to some end-of-year awards bait. The Brothers Bloom is a tricky film to pigeonhole, but one that's fun to enjoy, respect, analyze and appreciate.
I would hope that some of those 39% would let the film grow on them, and that the film's audience grows in years to come. Critics are funny beasts, after all. Some of them praised movies as self-evidently stupid as Terminator Salvation, incontrovertibly the worst film of the year.

Why are people bringing up reviews in the first place? This is an opinion thread. Who cares if a critic doesn't like the movie I like? The point is that I liked it.

I intend to see it, was just noting that it does have a variety of opinions out for it. Of course, there is no pleasing some people out there.
I was not a fan of Brick but think Bloom looks like a fun time at the movies, I hope it finds its way down here in a reasonable amount of time.

I don't know what "best" is, that's quantifiable & objective, can't be debated.
But my favorite movie so far is still Adventureland, which doesn't seem to be very popular here. Although, there is a ton I haven't seen yet.
