DVD Talk review of 'The Longest Day' (Blu-ray)
I read Stuart Galbraith IV's DVD review of The Longest Day at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=33373 and...
I just picked this up for about 10 bucks at the Circuit City going out of business sale and am curious about something. Just a few minutes into the German General's (is it Rommel? Can't recall right now) opening speech in front of the Channel, he disappears--poof!--for a few seconds while his voice continues, and then just as suddenly--poof!--he's back. Was this really the way the film originally played? I no longer have an SD-DVD to check (though a friend of mine does, so I may need to visit him, LOL).

I think I remember what you're talking about.
I can't say with absolutely certainty, but that sequence has some rather dicey optical work and cutting. As I recall, what happens is there's a shot with the officer matted against a wide angle background shot of the beach, then as you say he disappears. I think that's because the editor wanted to cut from the officer to another angle of the beach, but mistakenly used this same background element. The result: POP! He disappears.
