DVD Talk review of 'Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys'
I read Brian Orndorf's DVD review of Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=36210 and...I find it difficult to trust this site in choosing the DVD or Blu-rays that I purchase. It seems all of the movies by or about Black Americans are given negative ratings or typed as trash. I find the movie, THE FAMILY THAT PREYS to be a very good film and so do my friends who have watched it with me. I have found that when a select a DVD based on the site's review, I usually don't like them because they seem to be wild films or films for men. What is the problem with the disdain for, seemingly, all of the films done by Black Americans?

I read David Walker's DVD review of The Secret Life of Bees at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=36157 and...I agree with him about this film. It was quite a wonderful movie to watch.

To be fair, there are plenty of reviews trashing films with predominately white casts, too. It's called judging a movie for what it is, not the skin color of the cast. The fact is, Tyler Perry makes vapid, shallow, often offensive pictures that are aimed solely at a specific demographic. That's fine if you're in the demographic (although I would hope that people would look at his movies and demand better representation on film), but when you're on the outside, it's all too easy to see his many flaws as a writer, filmmaker, and performer. Honestly, if given the choice between watching a Uwe Boll film or a Tyler Perry film, I'd pick Uwe Boll every time. And it has nothing to do with the skin color of the people involved.

Well, just last week I gave a positive review to Spike Lee's "Miracle of St. Anna"-- and that's not a film that has received a lot of positive notices. The difference, of course, is that Spike Lee is a talented filmmaker, while Tyler Perry can't put a film together with a fucking map.
Trash doesn't have a color. It's just trash.
