Both my Malata and my Philips 642 died recently, so now I am without a multi-region player.

Can anyone recommend some currently available good players that can be easily purchased at a B&M such as Best Buy, Curcuit City, Target or Wamart?
and that has a relatively easy hack like can be done with a remote?
and that can correctly convert PAL to NTSC?

Did you mean DVP-5992? This is readily available, good upconverter with an easy multi-region hack. I don't know about the PAL to NTSC conversion, though. Someone else will have to comment on this.
