I'm a little shocked by The Day the Earth Stood Still's success. Even if it had positive buzz, the previews don't make it look like a fast-bang action show.

It made $70 million worldwide

I'm not sure $31 million for The Day The Earth Stood Still can be counted as a success, given its cost and the expectations on it. I guess it will depend on how it holds up over the next few weeks.

Oh, this will make 4 times as much elsewhere. Most movies like this does.

I took the wife to see QoS this weekend (my second time seeing it, her first).

I actually liked it better the second time. Picked up on a few things I missed.

I'll see Transporter 3 this week, but I'll leave TDTESS for a video rental.

Milk continues to do well in limited release.

I've never heard of it, but this really bombed, especially since they put this out in 2100 theaters.

That is amazing. It had the WORST ever opening for ANY MOVIE that opened on 2,000+ screens.

It disgusts me they wasted so many screens with this . they could have opened up Slumdog, The Wrestler, Defiance, Frost/Nixon, Milk, Gran Torino or movie that people actually wanna see instead of this waste. Still its comforting to know this movie will never even make back what it cost to make the prints for it.

My wife goes to Reel Babies every two weeks, and they get three movie choices a couple of weeks prior to the scheduled showing. Delgo was one of the options, and neither one of us had ever heard of it. We are both pretty up on movie releases, so it was surprising that it had such a wide release. I finally saw a preview of it, and the only thing I can honestly remember is that I had zero interest in seeing it. I honestly can't remember anything else about it.

Since I hadn't heard of it either, I ust looked up Delgo on IMDB . . . has Anne Bancroft's voice in it. Interesting.

Why is TDTESS #1?

The sad part about that is, according to Wikipedia:

Fathom Studios began development on Delgo in 1999; animation work began in 2001.

It had been in the works for close to a decade! When they started it, casting Freddie Prinze Jr. as the lead voice might've seemed like a good 'get'...

Looking at the Top 10 films -- and one of the WEAKEST holiday season Top 10s I've ever seen -- I can see what TDTESS topped the charts with $30m. There's NOTHING for single 20/30-something heterosexual white guys to see with his buds.

Quantum of Solace has been out for over a month now, plus it's generally regarded as a serviceable-to-mediocre Bond movie. Madagascar and Bolt are mediocre animated films aimed squarely at the kiddie set. Twilight and Australia are targeted towards female/gay audiences. Four Christmases is a holiday romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon, which is the closest thing to 20/30-Something Heterosexual White Guy Repellant we have, given the constraints of current technology.

And Transporter 3 is a dopey sequel to a dopey series that pretty much screams "Wait for a rental, if you REALLY must."

Which only leaves MILK, which I'd love to see but it's in limited release.

No brainer, really, that the film topped the charts with a steady but unremarkable $30 million. Watch how things plummet next weekend when word-of-mouth kicks in. What's next week, YES MAN and SEVEN POUNDS? Hmm... maybe not. Porn, canoe, and cashews make for

Taken would have fit perfectly for last week, or at the very least, a wide release for Slumdog Millionaire or The Wrestler.

TDTESS had looked bad since the original trailer pushed the "Green" message, made worse when they showed that 8 minute clip during Fringe.

I don't think $31 million for the weekend is all that good, especially since I Am Legend filled out the same weeked (I think) and that was a sci-fi actioner that made more than twice this amount. Given the negative buzz but the Christmas and New Year's Boost, I'd say this pulls in $100 million domestically.
