Duplicity (Gilroy, 2009): Clive Owen, Julia Roberts, Paul Giamatti

Synopsis:
CIA officer Claire Stenwick (Roberts) and MI6 agent Ray Koval (Owen) have left the world of government intelligence to cash in on the highly profitable cold war raging between two rival multinational corporations. Their mission? Secure the formula for a product that will bring a fortune to the company that patents it first. For their employers-industry titan Howard Tully (Tom Wilkinson) and buccaneer CEO Dick Garsik (Paul Giamatti)- nothing is out of bounds. But as the stakes rise, the mystery deepens and the tactics get dirtier, the trickiest secret for Claire and Ray is their growing attraction. And as they each try to stay one double-cross ahead, two career loners find their schemes endangered by the only thing they can’t cheat their way out of: love.

Considering how riveting and amazing Michael Clayton was, I hope you're right.

Michael Clayton was 119 minutes and rated R. What more do you want in a film?

Julia Robert's only tolerable movie was with Clive Owen so maybe this won't be too terrible.

I really like Clive Owen, but I'm not sure I can handle Roberts... Plus, I dont know if maybe its just a poor trailer, but its not really selling me, at all...

I'll rent it.

If this is half as fun as the last outing from Giamatti and Owen... We'll be just fine.

I don't know if it would be possible for me to consider walking out of a movie before it starts. But if what you hope becomes true, then I'm about to find out.

Shoot 'Em Up was amazing for the type of film it was; anyone that went into that movie expecting anything serious was really misleading themselves.

You'd think the title would have been self-explanatory.

Personally, I think this looks awful. Anything that tries to sell Julia Roberts as a) competent or b) attractive is automatically crossed off my list.

No, it fails. Hard. It's a notch above Smokin' Aces.

Seeing tv ads for this all the time and all it seems like is a romantic comedy. Too bad Clive Owen plays an MI-6 British spy and yet this is the movie we get.

I like all four actors (including Tom Wilkinson) and the writer/director is great so I'll check it out. I never understood the hate for Roberts...

Variety rave:
An ultra-sophisticated love story between two corporate spies with pronounced mutual trust issues, "Duplicity" is a brainy, non-violent "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," the film "Intolerable Cruelty" wanted to be, a "Trouble in Paradise" for modern times. Smart, droll and dazzling to look at and listen to, writer-director Tony Gilroy's effervescent, intricately plotted puzzler proves in every way superior to his 2007 success "Michael Clayton."

"Closer"!? Ha! Good one. That's not a film. That's an hour and 44 minute Calvin Klein commercial. Horrible movie. Here's one of the best reviews I've ever read. For this or any flick:

And even though I kind of want to see "Duplicity", if I see that G.D. trailer one more time.....

A-men, brother. While I definitely have a hetero man-crush on Clive Owen, I just really fucking hate Julia Roberts.

Well, it wasn't in black & white so it's not exactly like a Calvin Klein commercial.

Re: Duplicity (Gilroy, 2009): Clive Owen, Julia Roberts, Paul Giamatti

Just saw this movie. I normally don't care for Julia Roberts. I think she has weird looking facial features and is really full of herself. This movie is very entertaining with a nice twist at the end. Pay attention though. It jumps around and at times I was confused. Everything makes sense by the end but I kept wondering if I missed something.`
Spoiler:
There was a speech between Owen and Roberts that was repeated and it took awhile to figure out why.
I equate this movie with Ocean's 11; twists and turns, humor and suspense. Didn't have quite the chemistry of the ensemble cast of Ocean's but was an enjoyable 2 hours and kept you involved. A- or 3 1/2 starts from me.
