How would you rate this year for movies?
Hi everyone.
I've started this thread because I want to pose the question to people here being how would you rate this year for movies?
What is it a good one? Was it a bad one or was it simply better than average.

I typically wait for movies to come out on DVD before watching them so I'm a little behind on this year but from what I've seen its been a decent one.
I started the year with Cloverfield. An interesting action/monster movie which I really enjoyed.
Some very enjoyable comedies came out: Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Tropic Thunder and Zack and Miri. Didn't catch a few others like Pineapple Express.
As far as comic book movies we had the slightly above average Incredible Hulk, the excellent Iron Man and the out of this world Dark Knight.
I haven't caught any of the Oscar contenders other than TDK. I plan on seeing Slumdog Millionaire next week. I'm really looking forward to The Wrestler and Benjamin Button as well.

Good for me, but I really like comedies and comic book movies. It hasn't been great for me so far in the sense of cinematic masterpieces for me, but those are still coming out.

It's been an entertaining year for me. While there haven't been many truly exceptional movies, the general level of quality/entertainment has been higher than it has been in recent years.

I'd say pretty good. The summer season was mediocre in a good way. That is, Iron Man, Indy 4, Incredible Hulk, Hellboy II were all good, but none were spectacular. The Dark Knight is what will set this year apart from others. The only movies from winter/spring that I really liked were Cloverfield and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and I don't think I've seen enough fall movies to really judge.

Maybe I've gotten better at what I've been seeing, but I've been disappointed less than usual this year.
There's also a few movies that I expect to crack my Top 10 for this year, and I haven't seen them yet.
If I were to compare this year to last, this one had more "good to very good" movies, but last year had more great movies.

I think also after last summers trilogy of suck (Spider-man 3, Shrek 3, Pirates 3) the fact that this summer's hyped up movies were actually good boosted the years overall image.

Far too premature a question for most of us who haven't had an opportunity to see the films that receive limited/platform releases toward the end of the year. Ask me again in February/March, when I've seen:

In terms of "event" movies, it's been a great year - with Dark Knight, Iron Man, Indy IV, Incredible Hulk, Wall-E, etc.
In terms of serious award contenders, I think the pickings are slim in 2008. That's why Dark Knight has such an excellent shot of a Best Picture nod.

While I agree with that, don't forget that last summer had Transformers, Live Free or Die Hard, and The Bourne Ultimatum.

At this point I would say it has been very average. That could all change though in the coming months with several highly anticipated films coming out.

Exactly. A thread like this is pointless at this point, as most of the worthwhile films haven't been released yet or are in limited release.

So far, pretty poor. 2007 was by far the best of the decade. There's tons of movies still coming out but the only movies I've really enjoyed were In Bruges, The Dark Knight, and Rock N Rolla. That's it.

No epic dramas that I've seen or remember but a lot of stuff I've enjoyed and will watch forever - Wall-E, Dark Knight, Kung-Fu Panda, The Bank Job, The Fall.

I can't really think of a single movie made in 2008 that I would consider exceptionally good. Granted, I haven't yet seen everything that I would like to see, but then again no movie this year has really been one that I would have been really looking forward to see, therefore making me postpone watching them.
For me, the year has therefore been quite disappointing in terms of new releases. On the other hand, the lack of interesting material in the cinemas has also given me extra time and money to continue exploring older movies on DVD, making the year pretty enjoyable indeed.

I thought not very good until recently. If you look at the list in my signature, In Bruges and The Signal were previously number ones, but I just saw a slew of great movies, which changed my opinion drastically.
