Amazon - BBC Complete Series 45%-55% Off

Was just shopping at Amazon, and noticed some really low prices on Complete Series Sets for BBC shows. Picked up Only Fools And Horses for $111.99 (55% Off), Ballykissangel for $73.49 (54% Off), Men Behaving Badly for $48.49 (52% Off) and Black Books for $26.99 (55% Off).

Also saw good prices on complete show sets like Little Britain, Are You Being Served, Monarch Of The Glen, Hamish MacBeth, Fry & Laurie, French & Saunders, To The Manor Born, League Of Gentlemen, Vicar Of Dibley, Coupling, Red Dwarf and a few others.

I don't know if this has been posted yet. If it has, please delete the thread. Thanks.

I'd check amazon.co.uk for BBC stuff right now (for those of us with region-free players). I've been spending way too much money there lately with their good BBC and Channel 4 prices and a stronger dollar.

For example, the Bleak House (Gillian Anderson!) 3-disc set was like 8 pounds there (coming to a bit under $13 USD). That sure beats the amazon.com price of over $30 USD. Shipping isn't even that bad, costing around 5 pounds per shipment I've ordered. And you know what's hilarious? I receive these packages from EUROPE faster than I receive amazon.com shipments from the US!

Just food for thought.

Thanks a lot for the heads-up. The Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister collection are about $25 shipped to the US right now. I'm buying them - it's one of my favorite shows and it never gets old. So much better than that trashy Fawlty Towers...

For those of you who've never ordered from Amazon UK before, you should know that they take off 17.5% VAT from the listed price.

Thanks once again.

Hmm... The VAT is about 15% in my order.

Is this for everything, or just things over a certain price (I noticed the price changed on a few things that were 25 that I added to my cart, but not a few that were less than 10.)

It seems like many of the items have the VAT subtracted during checkout, but not all items, and it's not necessarily over/under 10 pounds that is the deciding factor (at least in my experience - I've bought CDs for 3.98 or 4.98 pounds and VAT was removed).

As strange as this may sound, I've seen that usually items with prices that end in 8 have had VAT removed, while those ending in 7 or 9 do not. I recently bought Hex S1 (11.97) and Hex S2 (9.97) and VAT was not removed, but it was removed for Ashes to Ashes S1 (15.98).

The exchange rates are quite good right now. Keep in mind that prices do change sometimes at Amazon UK, so I have a list of things I might want to buy and I check the prices every few days. It seems like some shows drop in price after 3 months, then after 5-6 months, then after a year.

Also, sometimes Amazon UK may have a great sale on a certain category. For several months, the Charlie Jade S1 set stayed at 34.98 pounds (list price 49.99 pounds). Then in June, it dropped to 12.98 pounds during a sci-fi sale (and I bought it!), then two weeks later it went back up to the current 21.97 pounds price.

++

Thanks for adding that. I had forgotten about that additional price advantage.

Anyone know if Amazon UK has a price guarantee? I'm thinking of holding back in case the Yes Minister box drops even lower since it seems that there's no sale on it right now...

Very tempted to order Trailer Park Boys: series 1-6. It's under $50, which is the cost of like 1 season in R1.

Amazon UK will remove VAT if the item ships diectly from them. They will not remove it if it ships from Amazon's Jersey Merchant, Indigostarfish.com. You can tell where it shops from to the right of the DVD cover on Amazon's site.

Many of the cheaper items ship from Jersey, so that is why VAT isn't removed. However, items fluctuate between the 2, so one week it may ship from Jersey, and then the next week Amazon will have it in stock to ship. I almost always wait till Amazon has it in stock before I order, however sometimes it is a long wait and I give in

Anyone know if Amazon UK has a price guarantee?
Amazon UK also has a price guarantee. If the item is reduced on the site within 30 days after you buy it, they will give you a refund on the difference.

That's a great price, but not exactly "complete".

Jaymole, they've recently removed their price guarantee. Seems like they had too many people cashing in on it. Shame, as I managed to use it once when I ordered the last series of Blake's 7 and the price went down a further three pounds a few days after they shipped it.

indigostarfish doesn't ship stuff internationally; you'll see Items for dispatch to UK will be sold by Amazon's Preferred Merchant on the pages of some items. I think it's just a glitch in their system. One time when I ordered something that said this, VAT wasn't removed at checkout, so I complained to them and they refunded the difference.

It's not just BBC stuff that's really cheap -- they've got season one of the original Outer Limits selling for £7.97. It's one eight single-sided discs, rather than four flippers like the R1s. With shipping, that's less than $15!

Great prices! Hey, can Amazon.com gift certificates be used at Amazon UK?

Wow, I just received a package that I ordered on the 17th. That is much faster than any US retailer I typically use. (Ordered the Sharpe Classic Collection (all the Episodes for right around $42 shipped, compared to the $200+ behemoth set over here, I'd say that's a deal!) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sharpe-Class...7292197&sr=8-1

I like how the "approximate" US$ price is given to the tenth of a penny and to one more significant digit than the original price in £'s

well, I forget to mention (as most of you may already know) you have to add credit card foregin exchange handling fee.

I think it is 3%.

Also, I second that the shipment from Amazon-UK has been really fast in the past six months or so (counting from the date it was ship out,) compare to Amazon-French and Gemany. well, I am in Atlanta which certainly help.

Does anyone know how the US and UK "Fawlty Towers" collections compare?

My guess is that the US release might be derived from a PAL source, suggesting the UK would be the better transfer. A better price, too.

The Life On Mars sets are a great deal, too, especially since they probably won't have a R1 release any time soon due to music licensing. Here are the current prices (I subtracted VAT before converting):

LOM S1 - 12.98 pounds ($16.55)
LOM S2 - 11.98 pounds ($15.27)
Ashes to Ashes S1 - 15.98 pounds ($20.37)

Each set has 8 1-hour episodes, plus bonus features, and the prices are very nice!
