Guys, a second much more thorough survey about HD DVD ownership has opened to follow up on that short first survey from a couple of weeks ago. This one gives respondents a chance to view results from that first survey as well as enter to win a Complete Matrix Trilogy HD DVD Collection or a $25 Amazon gift certificate.

If you own an HD DVD player, this is a good way to let your voice be heard and push for future releases, if you support that idea (it is actually one of the survey questions specifically).

Who is funding this? And who do they really expect to listen to or care about the results? With the marketing base diminishing with each passing day (due to inevitable player failure), there is just no amount of "yes I will buy these" that would encourage any studio to release any more content on HD DVD. Right now studios are just hoping they can rid themselves of the units they have without taking more of a loss.

If it costs next to nothing for em and they sell em at a reduced price directly, I don't see a problem with it.

Mine still works, still use it, would be happy to buy new titles in some of the proposed methods if the price were right. Wouldn't harm anything, though I guess I would buy less Blu discs.

I would buy more HD DVD titles, but with the only hardware manufacturer no longer making or supporting players, what happens when they start to break?

I have 2 players, still buy movies if they are super cheap, and even I think this is a dumb idea. If it didn't make it while it was supported, it won't come back from the dead.

I will also say, BD did a much better job making scratch resistant discs. Far superior.

Why can't some people accept reality?

Why can't some people just stop complaining and realize that they can win prizes!

I wouldn't be so sure that the players will not be available for quite some time. While they are mostly gone from retail stores, ubid and other auction sites are frequently selling used ones very inexpensively. I assume most are just returns from back when the stores were taking the players back for credit. I just got a used A30 from ubid to use as a backup player for $21. Consider that you can still get laserdisc players pretty easily off ebay and other sources, and that format has been dead for over 12 years.

Also, I would think if the Chinese manufacturers are making CH DVD now and it is just a modification of HD DVD, it wouldn't take much for them to convert the line to make an HD DVD player again if one manufacturer felt there was enough demand for them, maybe even just from current owners in a year or so wanting a replacement player.

I chuckled at the question that started something like "now that Blu-ray appears to have won the format war."

Also laughed at the Matrix set being worth 99.95 US. The $25 Amazon Certificate is definitely the better prize.

consider that laserdisc hardware was manufactured for like 15 years vs. something like 2 for HD DVD, so there are many more potential laserdisc players for the used market.

i still don't get the point of this, but good luck to whoever is trying to accomplish something.

To add to this, it is my feeling laserdisc players still working today likely had a much higher build quality than most of the HD DVD players being sold right now.

I'd be very surprised if my A20 was still working 5 years from now. That's why I made it a point to get an XA2 while I could.

I was hoping the prize would be something useful...like a Blu-ray player.

I like that the survey asked about $1 DVDs - if they made $1 HD DVDs and they were decent quality - I would go for that for sure.

Thanks raytrade for the survey...I took it and I too would certainly buy more movies if they put them out and as you said with CH-DVD if they are compatiable I have no problem buying them oversees as long as its good quality( Its also nice that the players are region free in terms of the HD-DVD's. Like you, I think the players will be around for awhile. I try to minimize my use of my A-35, however, and do not allow my daughter to use it so that it will hopefully last longer. I still really am happy with my player. Unlike others I did not purchase back up players. I just couldn't afford it at this time.

What about that question regarding being able to do true HD on a standard dvd or something along those lines? Haven't heard of that.

I took the survey. Personally, I'd rather have the second-place prize than the first-place Matrix HD-DVD collection, since I no longer collect or own any HD DVDs.

Yeah, I agree. I was surprised about the question about the film grain. Glad, we're not the only ones that are upset about that.

That was one of the most organized survey I have ever done. Usually there are about 25-50% of the questions such that the answers do not really apply to me. This survey accounted for almost every unique answer I had. Very impressed. As others have said, I'm not sure what this survey is going to accomplish. It seems like they should be doing this for Blu-Ray instead.

Physically HD-DVD is a different medium (different pit structure) but you can still encode HD-DVD on a standard DVD disc if the material is short enough. I got a porno title "Camp Cuddly Pines Power Tool Massacre" that uses a regular DVD (also comes with 3 bonus discs which are just standard DVD format)- when I opened it I thought they'd lied about it being HD, but it plays as HD-DVD- regular DVD players can read it but will give you an incompatibility message like if you try to play a Playstation 2 disc. On the computer, I did that thing we're not allowed to talk about here with it and that worked also.

You can also put DVD content on a CD if it's short enough, but not all machines will be able to play it back.
