So how does an indy like Kiss of the Spider Woman hit Blu-ray so early?
This film has never been on DVD and now it is being released on DVD and Blu-ray at the same time on July 27th. It is a great independent film to be certain, but it seems to be getting a release by City Lights Pictures. Are small companies really able to crank out a Blu-ray so early in the format's game? It is an "Amazon exclusive" whatever that means, but I have to wonder why they are able to do this while several other films that are just as great will probably never see DVD much less Blu-ray. Just seems odd to me...

Is this movie any good? I know it was well received when it was released, but I mean watching it today, does it still rank as a good movie? Might have to give it a rent.

Yes, other small companies like Magnolia and Echo Bridge have been able to release titles. There's even a new company called "Blu-ray Only."
BTW, you can't always assume that just because something took a long time to make it to DVD, or is about to be released for the first time, that it will take a long time to make it to BD. We got Reds and Twilight Zone: The Movie along with the DVD, and there will probably be others (we were supposed to get Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet too, but that unfortunately fell through). Since they're doing HD masters, it's not a huge step to go ahead and produce both. It's probably easier from a marketing standpoint anyway.

I pre-ordered this when I first heard it was available, and then surprisingly got an email this week saying that it would ship much sooner than it was projected. It's a great movie, on which a great Broadway musical was based.

I rented the DVD of this, and I don't expect the BD to look that good if it's based on the same master. There is frequent dirt and some scratches, and the image looks a bit soft (even for DVD).
Since the BD goes for the same price or less (it's $7 cheaper on Amazon), it's still worth buying since it won't be a double dip. We'll see what the reviews of the actual disc say, but don't expect a showstopper.

Well, I wasn't expecting any rental place to carry it as it is an "Amazon exclusive", but I now see that Netflix carries both SD and Blu-ray versions so I'm going to rent it first. Haven't seen it in over 20 years so...

I really am not going to complain that Indys are getting the Blu-Ray treatment.
I just hope some films I've been waiting for on DVD ("Howard the Duck" anyone?) will get a similar treatement.

I'd guess the independent label is trying to hit the BD market with its best titles. This film is actually quite known in other parts of the world, although I am not sure if there are non-US versions on DVD.
