Buy TV Shows on Standard DVD or Blue Ray?

I still need a Blue Ray Player but I collect a lot of Television shows. I like a lot of the late 90's shows too and was wondering if there is a way if the show will ever be Blue Ray or to buy the shows that have the complete series. I plan on buying some complete series sets soon.

Anyone know if these shows will ever get the Blue Ray Treatment?
(All These shows I am debating wheather to by the complete series of the show or wait for Blue Ray. I don't want to buy a complete series than later they come out with it on DVD. That would make me upset. )
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Angel
Roswell
Friends
Alais
24

I think those are the big shows
I know Smallville has Season 7 on Blue Ray but what about the other seasons?

I think out of those, 24 has the best chance of making it. At least moving forward, the new season and possible season 1 release.

The big problem I have with BD TV is cost. Where a movie is only $5 -$10 higher in MSRP from the DVD the TV sets can be double the cost. So far I have been buying Weeds on BD since Lions Gate has thankfully decided to price them reasonably.

It will just depend though. I really don't have to have my TV in BD and if the cost is considerably higher I will continue to buy shows on standard DVD.

As far as the list you showed I think Buffy will have problems coming to BD. Many of these TV shows do their special effects in standard def and they would be unable to transfer that in high def. I think this may have been an issue with the early seasons of Buffy.

I'm still buying stuff that doesn't come out on Blu-ray on DVD because it's either going to take forever to come out as a Blu-ray catalog title, and then they will only release the first or latest season and you've got to chance it on whether or not they'll put out the rest. Like Darkside said, cost is a big issue as well.

Yeah its a bit like VeeAitchEss. ;-)

Joking aside, many shows were shots in standard definition so going to blu-ray isnt going to make them look much better.

Anyone know what the chances of HBOs Six Feet Under hitting Blu-Ray?

Is it possible for old shows to be remastered for high defintion or is that just wishful thinking?

Sure. There was a thread around here somewhere that showed off some stills of what Cheers would look like remastered, IIRC.

Haven't seen that one mentioned anywhere yet.

It would interesting to see how they handle the Season 1 and 2 releases, as they were 4:3. Now I'd be fine with HD releases in that ratio, but I have a feeling they would probably make them 1.78 just like they did with the re-release of From The Earth To The Moon on DVD.

That would suck if they cropped them.

Was HBO-HD around back when those seasons aired? If so, I wonder how they were broadcast. Typically HBO doesn't show any 4:3 stuff in HD.

HBO-HD started in 1999, and I think the first season of SFU was in 2001. I didn't have HBO-HD then, but I'd imagine they aired those seasons like they do the Wire now. The later seasons were broadcast in HD, and most can be seen in repeat form on Universal HD. After the Sopranos and SATC it's arguably HBO's most popular show, so it coming to HD at some point is probably a fair bet.

Buffy will not. The SD effects would be too expensive to make it worth the investment. Probably the same for Angel though I think it was shot in HD from the beginning. Roswell wasn't really terrribly popular enough to warrant FOX doing a Blu-ray release. Alias MIGHT work. 24 is certainly your best bet.

Smallville season SIX is out on Blu-ray and seven is coming. I just started watching six last night, and it is simply AMAZING how good it looks on Blu-ray compared to the HD broadcast. Just the opening title credits with all the explosions and stuff look 100% better - no pixellation like the live HD feed. My guess would be that WB goes back and re-releases the entire series on Blu-ray if only to cash in on the fanbase that has already purchased the vastly inferior SD DVDs.

OH and BTW, please call the format BLU-RAY. It is not nor ever has been "blue ray"...

Any speculation on the possibility of a BD "TWIN PEAKS" release?

I have both seasons of Supernatural, and will get season three on dvd. But I would gladly double dip on the whole series to have it on blu-ray.

I'd be fine with buying something like "Rome" on Blu-ray but I don't see the point in upgrading sitcoms. I mean it's not like "Seinfeld" is going to be funnier in high def.

In the short term future, I would say chances are slim. I think for the forseeable future (say 2 or 3 years) the vast majority of TV on Blu-ray is going to be current series rather than classic ones.

Only because there are about half the episodes of a normal season.

I'll only buy TV on Blu-ray if they produce DVD quality on the discs and pack more episodes on each disc. I don't necessarily want "Petticoat Junction" in hi-def, but I'd like to have 2 discs per season vs. 6.
