No Video out on new TV?

Hey all,

I just bought a Samsung LN46A550 LCD HDTV (HERE ) and (HERE )

and a Toshiba D-R410 upconverting/recording DVD player (HERE ) and (HERE )

Ok, now the TV has a built-in HD tuner, and the DVD plaer records, however, there is no video out on the TV. That means there's no way to use the DVD recorder with this combo.... Please tell me I am missing something?

This is an upgrade for me, and even my old setup could record to a DVD recorder. What gives?

Thanks,

Matt!

I don't think I've ever seen a TV with a video out.

You can't record HD content anyway. You need an external tuner like a cable box or something.

Oh,

Ok - See, I used to have a set-top HD tuner that had video out. That's how I would record TV.

Since this new TV had an HD tuner built in, I figured I could just have a video-out to a DVD recorder....

I still have my set-top tuner. Maybe I should hook that back up with video out to the TV, and video out to the DVD recorder.

That's probably the only way, huh?

(but wouldn't this defeat the entire purpose of having the tuner built-in in the first place?)

Thanks,

Matt!

The purpose of a built in tuner, in theory, is so the small amount of people who only get programming from an external antenna do not have to use one of the set top boxes just for converting the signal, like what you have. In practical use, the majority of people use a cable or satellite receiver anyway, which negates the usefulness of the built in tuner.

It was harkened as a big deal back in 2000 or 2001, whenever the built in tuners started becoming commonplace, but they are more or less irrelevant these days.

To answer your question, though, yes, you'll either need to hook up the tuner you have or subscribe to cable or satellite and get one of their boxes in order to record via your dvd recorder.

Thanks...

i guess i'll hook the hd tuner up as the video source for the dvd recorder.

however, i love the interface of the new tv's tuner, so i will use that for tv, and just use the hd set top box to record.

however, that means 2 seperate antennas....that sucks. I wonder if i could use a splitter on the rabbit ears (which work perfectly) and have the signal going to the tv and hd tuner box

i think i can preview the video feed when recording to dvd - that's nice because i won't have to bother having video out cables running from the tuner to the tv....

make sense?

That sounds like a good idea. As a plus, you can now record one HD channel on the DVD recorder while watching another on the TV.

You definitely can split the single antenna you have to go to both tuners. You just need a signal splitter like this:

Yes, some do have these outputs. My 58" Panny Plasma does. It's stupid though because it's only composite and you have to be watching the channel your recording. Older analog TVs from the 90's had them, also.
