Buying a Bob Marley album......

I don't own any of his music. What do you guys recommend as a first buy?

Legend or Exodus?

Probably best to start with Legend

Get Legend. If you are not a huge fan, it's all the Bob Marley you will ever need.

Exodus.

But I'm pretty sick of most of the songs on Legend.

Big fan of the early stuff he did with Lee Perry like African Herbsman and literally hundreds of comps.

I'd throw in One Love as part of the discussion. It shares a lot of overlap w/ Legend and has four more tracks, plus it's presented in chron order.

There's so much out there. I have a 3-disc compilation album that has about 40 of his best tracks. I also have the box set of hits/rarities they put out a few years ago. I'm not a rabid fan, so that was about all I needed.

I recommend Bob Marley Gold (2 discs) - pretty good selection of songs.

I think the four disc "Songs of Freedom" set has all the greatest hits and covers his career from the early days in the 60s up until his death.

Get the deluxe edition of Catch A Fire, the second disc is the original recording of the entire album, plus a few songs that were dropped for the "international release". That disc in my opinion is the best of Bob Marley and the Wailers, but I prefer the earlier stuff. Natty Dread is awesome too.

Like with many box sets, there are remixes and a few odds and ends that probably isn't the best place to start for a beginner. While most all of his albums are worth picking up, I'd suggest the 2 disc version of Legend. For greatest hits albums, there isn't much better than that.

Well, I bought "Legend" and I think it is a great album. Though I had no idea "Gold" existed as it looks to be the better compilation. Oh well.
