Need new reciever. My preference is Yamaha

My Yamaha HTR-5740 is 4.5 years old and is missing HDMI. Going to be upgrading my DVD player to an upconverter also. Suggestions? I'd like to keep my reciever cost

Upon further thought I don't want to part with my current set up! But all the upconverting DVD players requires HDMI -- right? If so is there something simple to convert HDMI to Component so I dont have to buy new cables, or pull up carpet and mess with existing layed cables?

Thanks!

I'm afraid that would not matter. If you connect a component cable to an upconverting player like an Oppo the output would be limited to 480, all the adapter would do would be to allow you to send it to an hdmi port.

I'm not sure I understand what this has to do with a receiver? Connect the player straight to your video source, you just need to have the audio go to the receiver.

Brian Shannon is correct that you can just put the HDMI directly into the TV. You'll get HDMI picture but not HDMI sound (but you can still get digital sound through digital optical or coaxial; that's what I was doing until now).

It sounds like you don't have Blu-Ray yet but if you are thinking about it you could use a new receiver for the HDMI and also one that decodes the newer DD and DTS formats.

I just replaced my ten year old once top of the line Yamaha receiver for those reasons. I was dead set on Yamaha and was going to get the RX-V663 or the HTR-6160 (they are virtually identical). They have two HDMI inputs and can decode all the formats. You can get them for under $400.

Then I heard about the Onkyo TX-SR606 which was about to come out. Pretty much like the Yamahas but with four HDMI inputs. I read up on all of them and pre-ordered the Onkyo for $449 shipped from J&R. It just came a few days ago and I spent most of today (well, now it's yesterday) setting it up and figuring it out. I have an HD DVD player and a Blu-Ray player hooked up and they both sound great as does the HDTV.

I don't think the Yamaha could be any better but you really can't go wrong with either Yamaha or Onkyo. Both have received glowing reviews. I decided solely on the basis of the extra HDMI inputs.
