"Get The Knack" album - anything else good on it other than the two hits?

In 1979, The Knack released their debut album, titled "Get The Knack" (ha-ha, a little play on words, how ingenius) and it was a massive success.

The lead single, My Sharona, was a #1 hit for seven weeks, enabling the album to reach the summit on the album chart for five weeks. Not to shabby.

The second single, Good Girls Don't peaked at #12.

Was there anything else on this album, any hidden gems so to speak, worth investigating? Or not really?

(by the way, I think this qualifies as a bad album cover)

This was a pretty strong debut. If you like the two singles, you'll like the rest of the album. Most of the songs are equally as good as the well known ones.

Subsequent albums had hits & misses but this one is pretty consistent.

The Knack's debut is one of the all-time classic power pop albums, an excellent rock record, and highly underrated! Just about everything on it is great, if not good. If you haven't checked it out yet, definitely do so.

Other great tunes on it, besides the ones you mentioned, are...
"Frustrated"
"Maybe Tonight"
"Let Me Out"
"Selfish (She's So)"
"That's What Little Girls Do"

Aside from that, it's worth hearing the full album version of "My Sharona", just for Berton Averre's extended guitar solo - also one of my Top 5 favorite guitar solos by anyone.

And, if you've never seen it, you should rent (or buy, it's cheap enough) the DVD called Getting The Knack. It's a documentary about the band, which plays kinda like an extended version of a VH1: Behind The Music episode, only better.

I also luv that debut album. The whole damn thing. They certainly were slagged for their lyrics and a huge backlash for the 2nd album (which wasn't nearly as good).

Was into it back in the day, but now it just sounds like watered down new wave sugary pop. Plus Doug Feiger is a grade A asshole.

Not a fan of power pop? I don't really hear big differences between these guys and other grade A power pop of the day. I always heard Feiger was a jerk, but after watching the documentary on the band he came across as fairly affable.

This album got a lot of play on my turntable. As others said, if you liked the 2 songs you're sure to enjoy the others. It's a very fun listen.

I cringe/laugh when I hear the edited version of "Good Girls Don't" on the radio. Plus, being a huge Beatles fan, I wasn't sure if I was appalled or ambivalent with the album's nod to the "Meet The Beatles" artwork when I first saw it. But the music was great so all was good

Oh, btw, the real Sharona who inspired the song is a real estate agent in L.A.

Sharona Alperin
