Frank Whaley: Anyone else a casual fan of this actor?

Whenever I see Frank Whaley in a movie, I always think to myself "how about that, there's Frank Whaley!" I just looked at all the films he's done and I'm surprised that this actor has had a pretty good career in Hollywood. There are some better actors than him with more presence that haven't even headlined a film - as far as I know Frank Whaley has headlined two films - Career Opportunities and Swimming With Sharks. (according to IMDB.com, it looks like he has headlines some direct-to-video movies though) What would be the equivalent of a "Frank Whaley" actor today - Adam Brody or Topher Grace?

geez he's looking old:

I still picture him as this:

Frank has always been underused, for some reason. I find him completely believable in whatever role he's in. He turned up in a Law & Order last year and I was like, "Frank Whaley! Where the hell have you been?!"

I've been a big fan of Swimming With Sharks for years, so I always appreciate him in anything he happens to be in. He does tend to pop up in random films from time to time.

...from 'Vacancy'. He either dropped weight specifically for the role, or he has a huge tapeworm.

I have always loved him in The Doors, Hoffa and as the fake Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK

I'm actually a fan of Frank Whaley the writer-director. I think "Joe the King" and "The Jimmy Show" are fantastic.

I haven't seen his latest film. It played at the Toronto Film Festival to lukewarm reviews.

he's pretty cool. I'll remember him from Swimming with Sharks and the fake Lee Harvey Oswald like bbuckley. When he popped up in the Drillbit Turner trailer was like: Hey Fank Whaley!

I couldn't remember him in that movie, so I looked him up on IMDB and couldn't believe he was Boy.

I don't like people who I ask for Sweet N' Low from and bring me back equal.

But yes, Frank Whaley is a prime example of a great character actor.

I didn't know who Frank Whaley was when I clicked on the thread title. But after I saw the picture that's immediately what I thought of. That's the only movie that I could 100% for sure place him in.

I've always liked him myself. Just seems like a nice guy,and always is fun to watch when onscreen. Similar to Dick Miller. Another actor that feels like an old friend dropping by once in awhile. So it's always nice to seem them showing up in a film, usually unexpectedly.

I haven't seen the theatrical cut of JFK in years. But then I found out the Directors Cut has more Frank Whaley as Oswald impersonator scenes. And that's all good in my opinion. Since I loved those scenes in the film.

Nice to see an appreciation thread for the guy.

As for his role in Hoffa:
Spoiler:
Is he the only guy who has killed Danny DeVito on film?

How did he die in Batman Returns? All I remember is him puking up oil.

I liked him in Pulp Fiction - without giving anything away, it's the scene where Samuel L. Jackson quotes the bible.

I agree that he is a very natural actor, at least in the film roles I have seen him in. There is no, "Hey! Look at me act!" going on.
