Saturday Night Live (03/08/08) H: Amy Adams, MG: Vampire Weekend

I think she'll be an okay host... but I've never heard of the musical guest.

Never heard of them either and I am hip to all the crazy new fangled rock & roll groups that the young folk listen to today.
Are they anything like the Doobie Brothers?

I only first heard of Vampire Weekend a few weeks ago. They were on the cover of one of the music magazines that I get for free. I've checked them out, and I like them alright.

I thought they'd be some type of GWAR, Slipknot, Lordy sort of band...
... boy was I wrong.

Yeah, I was dating a real scenester girl back in December and she told me this band was going to be huge soon and I was like, "Yeah, whatever."
Now, they have an insane amount of hype surrounding them.

Amy Adams is the missing link between Jenna Fischer and Kirsten Dunst on the evolutionary scale of Hollywood's "Generically Attractive Girl-Next-Door" types.

Say what you will about Forte, but that man should have held a clinic for Horatio Sanz on how not to crack up during a bit. I couldn't keep it together if I were trying to do a Tim Calhoun routine.

So I've now listened to an album and tonights performances of Vampire Weekend, and I'm still trying to figure out why they are popular. It's not bad, but I'm not enchanted by it.

My review:
-Holy God, Amy Adams is just amazing.
-I still like the new girl.
-Not a bad show, but nothing great.
-If this episode took place back when the show was more consistent, I'd say it was a thumbs down, but given the inconsistency of SNL over the past few years, I can't complain too much about it.
-Simply put, I didn't really flat out hate anything on the show tonight like I usually do, so that's gotta say something.

I like Amy Adams, and she was pretty game, but outside of the marriage counselor, that was terrible. Poor song selection from Vampire Weekend too. I give a fuck about an Oxford comma.

Recap
(with apologies to Charlie Goose)
Hilary - Poehler. So, because that first skit with the Obama love-fest got publicity, they feel they have to start each show with one? Well, that's fine...if they're FUNNY.
Opening Tune - After seeing the commercial for Enchanted, I realize I did think that Wiig was starring in it. Other than that, I didn't care much for it.
Mirror Image - GREAT way to start the show! Nowhere to go from here but up.
Marriage Therapy - Poehler. Was there a point to this? If so, I must've missed it.
Digital Short - Can we have a fucking digital short WITHOUT fucking Samberg? Although, I must admit to enjoying the smackdown Sudeikis gave him.
Fierce - Poehler was in it, but so was the chick with the boobs. And Hader was great. As USUAL.
WU - Poehler. Chuckled at the Hells Angels zinger, but that was about it.
Penelope - I don't mind her in small doses, but the "conclusion" was pretty stupid.
Dr. Uncle Jimmy's Smokehouse And Outpatient Surgical Facility (on Route 13) - I think I wasted enough of my life typing the name of the skit out..
Roger Clemens Presents - Poehler. Hey, it's Hammond! Hey, it's another skit that ends with no conclusion.
the Tookie Styles Show - Not much to this. Did chuckle oh-so-briefly after the third dignitary was shot at.
Celebrations - Poehler. At this point I was FFWD very liberally. However, I paused whenever new girl was bouncing.
Oh, and, I like bands with fiddles, violins and other "hoedown" strings, but I did NOT get Vampire Weekend. Guess that's another band that the internets tell me i'm supposed to like that I can't figure out.
Oh well. Here's hoping next week's show will be better.
Ha. Yeah, right.

I guess the only way we'll get another decent SNL is if there is another multi-week strike. I went to bed thinking this episode was weaker that last week which was weaker than the week before, and I feel the same way this morning.
ETA: Armisen's Obama is too weak to be featured every week. He does one Obama tic fairly well, but a truly good impression needs to hit on three trademarks of the person being imitated. If Obama is the nominee and particularly if he is the next President, Lorne needs to make finding somebody with a better impression of Obama a serious priority.

I fell asleep during WU.
The only thing I remember from the first 45 mins was the Digital Short... and I thought that was stupid until Sudekis gave Samberg the beatdown to end all beatdowns.
