Free XBLA download?

I was watching Cops on G4 last night and in the news scroller at the bottom of the screen it said "Microsft is offering a free XBLA download as an apology for the connection issues over the last several weeks". Has anyone else heard about this? I checked XBL and didn't see anything...this would be awesome!

Yeah, it was mentioned in the XBL is down thread. No details yet about what the game is going to be or when we'll get it.

I believe the official statement said "in the coming weeks", and Microsoft has always been known to stretch things out as long as friggin' possible when it involves something free.

I'll be shocked (but happily shocked) if we get our games before February.

I would much prefer they improve their DRM to protect customer's investments when things like the LIVE outage happen, or a console invariably dies. If LIVE is down, you can't use the content you paid for, in many situations, and that just isn't fair.

Someone else guessed in another thread that it may be one of the Xbox Live Greatest Hits titles, and that makes a lot of sense.

I agree 100%. I was shocked to find I couldn't play arcade games that I paid for when I brought my 360 hard drive to another 360 at a location with no internet available. Someone who's sue happy should start a class action lawsuit over it, it's ridiculous.

Best case scenario, every gets a free 1000 points. Worst case scenario, we all get Joust.

Yep. My first 360 had to be exchanged after about four hours. Unfortunately in those four hours, I bought two XBLA games. I've been fighting with them on the phone for the last five months... "By the end of the month for sure". Yeah right.

That sucks. It's really a ridiculous situation. I'm surprised there aren't a lot more complaints about it.

An Open Letter from Marc Whitten about Xbox LIVE this Holiday
Published January 3, 2008

Dear Xbox LIVE Members:

During this past holiday season you helped us break a number of Xbox LIVE records. This included our largest sign-up of new members to Xbox LIVE in our 5 year history and just yesterday you broke the record for the single biggest day of concurrent members ever on the service.

As a result of this massive increase in usage we know that some of you experienced intermittent Xbox LIVE issues over the holiday break. While the service was not completely offline at any given time, we are disappointed in our performance. I would like to take this moment to thank each and every one of you for your patience and understanding as our team has worked around the clock to return the service to a stable state.

At the same time we would like to offer a token of our appreciation to all of you in celebration of record success for the service. And as a thank you for your loyalty during this holiday period, we will be offering all of our Xbox LIVE members around the world access to a full Xbox LIVE Arcade game that will be available to download free of charge. In the coming weeks we will be sharing the specific details of this offer with you.

Thank you again for helping make Xbox LIVE everything that it is today!

Sincerely,

Marc Whitten

This is the correct answer.

Anyway, I made the suggestion before but it'd be pretty sweet to get Geometry Wars: Waves as a surprise free game. Though I guess it's insane brutality wouldn't sit well with most mainstream "hardcore" gamers.. it'd be something that nobody has (as an XBLA title, at least) and it's a spin-off of one of the more popular XBLA titles. Of course, Bizarre hinted that it'd probably be including in the next full Geometry Wars on XBLA so I guess I could just be patient and take Joust again like everyone else.

Which makes you wonder, they probably had a free one on deck already and are now using it to smooth things over.

I just hope that this one is one I don't have or they just give everyone points to buy what they want. That is big time wishful thinking.
I still say they should just give us a month or two free live. Just extend every gold members account by 1 or 2 months for the renewal date.

So they will give us an arcade game we won't be able to play when live goes down again. Perfect.

It's annoying, I agree. I'm certainly not buying another Arcade game until I see what we get for free. How hard could it be for them to decide? Announce it already!!

Trust me, I couldn't agree more. I bought it on launch day (I love the board game), and it's my most played game according to 360voice (I've played it like 70 days). I was not pleased at all when they announced that.

Sounds like you got more than your money's worth though. Pac-Man: CE is my most played game at around 70 days and I wouldn't be upset if they offered that up free. It would sting a little missing out on a game, but if it gets more people to play it, then great. I have definitely gotten my money's worth out of it and it would be hard to get upset over.

My Gold subscription expired a week ago and I haven't renewed. I'd assume the free download is for everyone, not just gold subscribers?

It's for both silver and gold members.

It had better not be... or they better do a more for gold members.

While silver members only had problems maybe signing in, etc.. Gold members had tons of trouble matchmaking into games, etc. Silver members do not pay for the ability to access live like gold members do.

Im in the same boat. I just lost Gold Yesterday and havent added another card yet. If they dont give me a download id be so pissed. Ill probably renew before though.

I dont really think it is necessary for them to give everyone a gift just because there was trouble but im not arguing. Id be happy just getting a 1-2 week extension on live.
