I bought and am working through the second season of Murder She Wrote on DVD. The seventh episode, which has a tense final act in a mansion during a storm, stuttered and behaved as if the disk was scratched, except that it was in pristine shape.

Are there encoding problems that can make good DVDs behave this way, or is it more likely that my DVD player needs cleaning or replacing?
