Hey everyone,

Just joined DVDTalk. I'm a member over at HDD and pretty active.

I jsut recently got into movies withing the past year. I would like to boost my sdvd collection now that I have a HD-A2 for upconversion.

Just wondering what the quality of the cheap discs at wallmart is like? Theres always discs in the $5-10 range that I would love to get that I don't think will be on HD anytime soon. But, I don't want to get a crap quality disc.

I haven't bought too many of them but they're no different from any other disc you would buy in any other store. They're just older movies that they're trying to move to make room for newer inventory.

I'm not really sure what you're asking but if you're wondering if the DVD's you get from the discount bin at Wal-Mart may be defective/poor quality the answer is no. They are the same movies you can get anywhere but since no one wants to pay $15 for them they're in the $5 bin. Of course there is a chance that the DVD may be defective but you take that chance with ANY DVD you buy.

If you're asking if the DVD is poor as in poor transfer/lack of extras etc then it depends on the movie. Usually the movies in the discount bin are there because few people want them and therefore there is a slim chance of them making a Special Edition DVD of it, so the DVD in the bin is your only option.

Then again, some of the movies in there are the "bare-bones" version (no extras) and a special edition may be available. You're going to have to look up the indivdual movies you want to see if thats the case.

Welcome aboard! Well I would do whatever you want to do but if it were me I would buy the ones that you defenitly do not think that will be coming to HD soon. Most of the movies in the 5-10 dollar bin isn't that bad of quality..sometimes there are very good quality and I've even found some Divimax editions in that so yeah I guess it's just whatever you wanna do. Welcome to DVD Talk. The discs in the discount bins I've found are usually Full Screen only. No Widescreen = no sale.

Sure, but that's only when there is actually a FS version available. There are many discs in there where WS is the only version produced.

Try the review section and you should be able to find dvd there to buy. I read the reviews quite often. They are good about quality of a release. I usually agree with them on dvds what I am buying.

The only real problem with the Wal-Mart bin is that the DVD's can often take a beating in there. So you have to be careful to watch out for floaters (discs that have dislodged from the hub and are rattling around inside the case) and knicks/tears/dents on the boxes and cover art. Otherwise, there's a lot of good stuff to be found.

Thanks guys. Been wanting to see Resavoir Dogs for a long long time, gonna have to pick this up as well as the special edition of Young Guns. If HDM keeps it up I may not get around to purchasing many sdvds... just picked up 8 hddvd for $15 a pop.

The Reservoir Dogs DVD that Wal-Mart has in the $5 bin is the 10th Anniversary Edition. If I were you I'd avoid that one and get the far superior 15th Anniversary Edition which is going for $9.99 at Amazon and at BestBuy right now and will be $8.19 come Friday when the DeepDiscount 20% Off Sale kicks off.

Just read the countless reviews of the discs on the web !
Overhere (Holland, Europe) over 95 % of all films on disc can be bought between 3 and 8 euros so there are thousands in there with "as good as it gets for SD DVD" video and audio quality.
It's certainly not "the lesser" films that can be bought dirt-cheap overhere.
Essentially every movie older than 6 months gets a new -standard- dirt cheap low price.
I'm pretty sure that's the case in many European countries, it's a great time for being a movie on disc collector.

Maybe I misread the original post, but I assumed he was talking about the cheapy public domain titles that walmarts always seem to have. My local walmart has a whole 4 sided display full of them, all in slimline cases. Never really found anything in there of interest so I havent bought any, but I imagine the quality is on par with other public domain titles.

Well he mentioned "discs in the $5-10 range" - that pretty much precludes the public domain cheapos in the thinpaks since they run cheaper than $5. Also, he asked about Reservoir Dogs, which is clearly not an old public domain title.
