Amazon Opens DRM-Free MP3 Download Store
Amazon has opened an online store to compete directly with itunes for downloading mp3s. prices are comparable or lower than that available in itunes. additionally, all songs are DRM free. music is encoded as a 256 kbps VBR MP3 daring fireball has a brief review of the store and of the mac version of amazon's downloading software.

Interesting... if they expand the selection I may be into it. But a search for U2 and Foo Fighters yeilded a "we do not have the full catalogue of XYZ artist at this time, we are working to expand the selection" message. We'll see what happens to the currently good prices once there are some big names available - those labels won't allow non-DMR downloads for cheap.
Personally I like iTunes and have only run into one DRM issue when I was burning multiple CDs for my wedding... but we all know how to bypass that issue.

I think that they'll get a lot more artists - the record companies want competition to iTunes because they are tired of iTunes dictating the terms (price per song, the companies want an amount larger than 99 cents for new releases).

Most iTunes songs are at 128 kbps .aac, but EMI songs are at 256 kbps .aac which is supposed to be indistinguishable from a CD, for $1.29.
iTunes customers can also upgrade their 128 kbps EMI songs for 30 cents to the 256 kbps rate.

I bought a couple songs from two different albums. It's weird that one was CBR 256 kbps while the other was VBR avg. 229 kbps. Not a big deal though.
It was pretty easy to download but for some reason, it keeps opening iTunes but foobar2000 is my default mp3 player.
Edit: OK, changed the add music to itunes option in the amazon mp3 downloader program.
