where do you guys go to hear/learn abut new music? most radio stations only play the same group of 15 songs over and over with a few older songs mixed in... dont own satellite radio, either. just curious where people hear about new bands and songs since most music threads mention groups/songs i have never heard of

it depends on what you listen to...but I mainly listen to indie type of music and hear a lot of new bands I like on woxy.com

I never listen to the radio if I can help it. I haven't since 1989 (year I graduated high school). Over the years I've discovered new music through:

-friends
-internet forums I trust with people can relate to (like here for example)
-magazine reviews, or other articles that catch my eye in music magazines
-internet reviews (popmatters, stylus, pitchfork, onion A/V club, metacritic)
-finding out what my favorite bands were influenced by
-finding out what my favorite bands currently listen to
-Amazon.com user reviews and other recommendations (based on what I've bought, or just following the 'similar items' links, or user lists)
-pandora.com and other cool online radio sites
-browsing record stores and taking a chance or two on stuff that catches my eye
-trying a new genre I haven't listened to before and starting with some of the most respected artists of that area

Now days, I'm in the habit of checking youtube, myspace and/or official band sites before buying stuff I might be interested in.

For me and my taste of music (death metal/metalcore) its either Headbangers ball or Liquid metal on xm or going to record and tape traders and checking out the new release wall.

I hadn't listened to the radio in several years until last week. I couldn't remember my favorite radio station frequency, so I gave up.

My recommendation is check out The Onion's AVClub music reviews. Most of their reviews now have a song to preview, so if I like the one song, I'll usually check out a few more reviews and then possibly hunt it down.

Plus, the AVClub's reviews tend to be relatively short (some as short as a paragraph or two), easy to read and not "holier than thou" (unlike pitchfork's).

I tend to put a lot of blind faith in the music reviews from The Week Magazine. Pretty much everything they give four stars I have enjoyed. This has led me to lots of different music I normally would have never known about. Here is a link to their archive:

I'll try to find out more about songs used in TV shows and movies that I watch. Even commercials are pretty hip with the music they use these days.

In middle school, MTV.

When I was in high school, through Rolling Stone and Spin. In college, through friends. I'm still friends with a lot of those people and we still send each other tips on new bands, etc.

Now, for new music, I like Pitchfork and especially Pop Matters which takes a much wider view of music (reviewing Soulive for example). I also regularly check out the UK charts as what is popular in the UK (in rock, not pop) is usually better than what's popular in the US.
