My wife is making me get rid of my DVD collection

That last DDD sale was the straw that broke the camel's back. My wife finally took a look at my collection and she wasn't impressed. I have about 600 titles inconspicuously shelved in a closet.

My wife said, "Why do you need to have so many DVDs? You don't have any time to watch movies. And when you finally have some time, I don't want to watch one of those old movies with you. Seriously, when we have time, why can't we just spend the $3 to rent a recent release at Hollywood Video. I mean, when is it going to end? New movies are always being released; you can't own them all. What good is it to just own them and let sit on the shelf?"

Then she asked, "How much exactly have you spent on DVDs?"

She knew it was bad when I started to sweat and stutter. Anyway, you'll soon see my collection on eBay.

RIP, Wannabe. Tough break, but you should treat yourself to something nice with the newfound money. How many of the 600 are you going to hold onto?
I guess I should be thankful that I've turned my lady into a "classic" movie aficionado. I justify my movie spending habits by telling her that I don't something if it's not on sale (I've averaged $7 per title over the course of my collection).

She has a point, but if you add up the costs of anything that one consistently buys, it will always seem wrong. Does she buy anything? Clothes or cigerettes? It can apply to her as well. I know that clothes are more practical than DVDs, but it can still apply.

Sorry to hear man.....I would say sort through your entire collection and keep the DVD's that are best ones with the best replay value. Maybe keep 100 maximum...then dump the rest and give the cash to your wife. Don't dump your entire collection because your wife is pissed at you...that's foolish unless she's threatening to throw you out of the house and divorce you....Anyways, good luck!!

Unless it's seriously cutting into your financial situation I don't think she has a truly valid point. If you make like $50,000 a year it won't kill you to spend $100 a month on DVDs.

The collecting only really becomes a problem if you have no savings and your having problems paying your bills and mortgage.

Offer to dispose (sell) the ones she likes first...this may sound harsh, but I'm sure some of those dvd titles are ones she would like to keep versus paying to rent them each time she would like to see them. Now that you have her attention, include her in selecting the titles you would like to keep and the titles she would be interested in keeping. I'm sure there are dvds she would prefer keeping versus selling (just like you would prefer to do.)

Ironically, I tried this with my wife and she didn't want to sell any of her chick flicks, but my 10 year old did select 20-30 titles (mostly direct to video from Disney) to be sold, and I also sold about 75-100 titles that didn't have a lot of replay value. By sacrificing some of the lesser knowns, you may be able to save the majority of the dvd collection for both of you (especially you) to enjoy going forward. Just my .02 cents...

Tell her not to let the door hit her in the ass on the way out. Just kidding, don't do that. Cannabis that's harsh, funny as hell but harsh. If your buying DVD's on credit and spending money you don't already have, then I side with your wife. Otherwise, compromise with a household budget that alots each of you with a specific amount of spending money per month (which you can use to buy DVD's) after all other bills have been paid and necessities have been accounted for. A certain amount of clothing is necessary but most women want to buy more than what's essential. She can use her portion of the budget to buy extra clothes if you wants. I would think your wife has to be worrying about money. That could be more serious than just your DVD collection. Money worries can bust up a marriage quicker than anything. You guys might want to seriously talk about a budget. But then again, I don't really know you. There is a FS/FT forum here, put 'em up there.

I had such talks with my wife. It's just necessary to let her know that it's what you do, it's what you like. It won't come to your mind to restrict her from buying new shoes or purses or make-up - because it's what women do. So tell her not to restrict you in some things you find vital. That's how two people get along together - they don't lock or restrain each other, they should co-exist like best friends. Other way I'm afaraid marriage is gonna be a one big failure.

My wife never asks the total of money spent on my movie collection or on my figure collection. She simply knows better.

I think getting rid of the ENTIRE collection is unreasonable. And plus, you're never going to recoup the investment that you spent on them. Expect to get 60 percent back, if that.

I think you can - anyone can - pare down their collection to 100 "must-haves". The Basic 100. Even 50, if need be.

Because everyone has a hobby and you shouldn't be stripped of your humanity.

Not to be harsh, but every time I see a "My wife made me sell such and such" post, it just makes me laugh. I've been with the same girl for 7 years, and although we're not married, we might as well be. She would never presume to tell me what I can and can't do with my own money or hobbies, and I would certainly never tell her she couldn't indulge in her own hobby (in this case, she's a Barbie collector).

As long as DVD collecting is not causing some kind of finacial disaster in your family, stand up for yourself and tell her it's your hobby, it's what you want to do, and you enjoy it. Would you seriously let someone else, even a loved one, take away something you enjoy just to satisfy themselves?

I'd beat her with a strap but it's not 1909 anymore.

I would simply tell her to mind her own fucking business but there's a reason why I'm currently not married. Personally I wouldn't sell my DVDs just because someone told me too or they didn't like how many DVDs I have. I would marry someone to be happy with but shes not my mother (or Grandmother) so she can't tell me what to do.

As long as your not borrowing money from the mafia or borrowing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the bank just to live half decently I think your fine & I would tell her that there is no reason for you to sell off your DVD collection.

It's not about the DVDs .... it's about the direction the marriage will be taking if you wimp out on this.

I like this idea. She may change her tune when you say that you are getting rid of all of her fav chick flicks first.

I don't think "inconspicuously shelving 600 titles" in a closet = having balls.

Same here. My wife doesn't object to the hours of entertainment my dvd collection has provided for our family so she doesn't bitch about how much I spend. She also knows that anytime she would like something, all she has to do is ask and I'll most likely buy it for her.

That is a tough break for you...I think she is being VERY unreasonable and I can't believe you are following through on her orders.

My fiance just moved in with me last month and now knows the full extent of my DVD addiction (it is in the thousands). She not only doesn't mind my having so many DVDs, but she is asking me not to sell some of the DVDs I no longer want.

However, she still doesn't understand why I watch so many movies
