Weekend Box Office Thread - June 8th - 10th, 2007

1. OCEAN'S THIRTEEN WARNER BROS. 3,565 12,438,000 3,489 n/a 12,438,000
2. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END BVI 4,002 6,215,000 1,553 -54% 238,585,000
3. KNOCKED UP UNIVERSAL 2,877 6,195,000 2,153 -38% 52,422,000
4. SURF'S UP SONY 3,528 5,786,000 1,640 n/a 5,786,000
5. SHREK THE THIRD DREAMWORK 3,925 4,421,000 1,126 -41% 270,564,000
6. HOSTEL: PART II LIONS GATE 2,350 3,378,000 1,437 n/a 3,378,000
7. MR. BROOKS MGM 2,453 1,319,000 538 -56% 15,026,000
8. SPIDER-MAN 3 SONY 2,570 1,197,000 466 -40% 322,478,000
9. WAITRESS FOX SEARCHLIGHT 708 481,000 679 -14% 10,828,000
10. GRACIE PICTURE HOUSE 1,093 164,000 150 -61% 2,110,000

-38% for Knocked Up is solid, especially for an R-rated flick (it's no Wedding Crashers (which dropped like.. nothing) but I don't think most expected it to be.)

Knocked Up will be one of the few Summer films to have some legs. LionsGate should've released Hostel 2 in the Fall. It's going to suffer from the Summer blockbusters.

To this day I never understood why they throw out so many potential blockbusters out on the same week early in the summer. Ocean's 13, Hostel II, and Surf's Up all will suffer because of this, and yet by the time August comes there is really nothing left.

I definitely wouldn't put Hostel 2 in a "potential blockbuster" category.

I think it could. I think the movie studios are gonna be hurting themselves releasing all these movies so close together. These movies dont have any time to breath. They should spread these movies out more often. Releasing all these movies allows the movie to have one big weekend then big drops the next because the next big movie is already out.

The kids all seem to love it, and the first one opened up to $20 million.

I'm glad to see Ocean's 13 take #1 and I'm glad it didn't bomb. Critics are split on the movie, I will most Def. be picking it up on DVD even though 12 wasn't the best it was better than most people give it credit for.
Surf's Up beat Shrek, So did Shrek offically Bomb compared to the other 2 previous movies or were those around the same #'s for the last 2?

Hostel: part 2 bombed for sure takin' 6th place. The review here at DVD talk hated the movie.
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=28507

I thought the first Hostel was decent but I am not as crazy about it as some people are. I thought the first one could have used the great set up it had alittle better than it did & It looks like the Hostel series is just going to turn into another Friday the 13th/Halloween/TCM mess.
At least all 3 of the Saw movies in the Saw series have been really good and didn't lose Quality and suck.

Made more than the first (260mill), less than the 2nd (440). So no, it didn't bomb (it'll be in the low 300's), they're already moving ahead with the sequels..

No big surprise with Hostel II. I get the whole "counter-programming" thing, but summer just isn't the time for hardcore genre flicks. Case and point: The Devil's Rejects and Land of the Dead both would have benefitted from a fall release.

House of Wax also. It had a May release.

It'll at least have a gigantic opening. Fantastic Four 2 should open huge next weekend.

I don't see any movie beating Spiderman, which I think can eek out around $340 million in the US.

Hostel Part II only has a budget of 10 million dollars, which it'll make close to in it's first weekend (maybe 8 million), so I wouldn't see this as a failure, just a dissapointment.

Hostel Part 1 made 80 million worldwide on only a budget of 3 million dollars.

Good to see Hostel II doing poorly. If only the first one had flopped to prevent this one from even being made...

However, Universal had a different strategy for releasing Land of the Dead in June: DVD release at Halloween.

Universal pushed up the release of the film from Halloween to June just for the fact they could have the DVD come out four months later and that's where they would make all their money. Universal spent little money promoting the theatrical release and spent all their marketing dollars more on the DVD release. However, the film did alright at June and it made back it's entire budget on opening weekend.

EDIT:

I was completely right about what Knocked Up, Pirates, and Shrek would do this weekend. Completely off on Surf's Up and Hostel.

Usually, you'd be correct, but I think this summer is different:

The Bourne Ultimatum
Rush Hour 3
The Invasion
Stardust
Super Bad

Roth has already said he has no plans to make a Hostel III, so I don't think hating on the movie is particularly necessary...

For all the hate Twelve gets on this board, the sequel opened only to $2MM less than 12, and only $1MM less than Eleven.

Funny to see such a tight range: $37MM, $38MM, $39MM...

Surf's Up seems to be hitting the mid-range for not-well-known animated movies: right between Open Season and Barnyard.

I have to admit, I'm happy to see Shrek 3 doing well. Making more money than the original, which none of the big sequels have yet to do and costing about half as much to make is pretty good.

I'll be surprised if Fantastic Four doesn't do well. It has to be the most advertised film this year. And I hope Transformers bombs away.
