Guess what country has the most movie viewership per capita?

Not "biggest movie business" or "most revenue"... rather, which country's inhabitants go the movies most?

Here's your answer:

Spoiler:

NEW ZEALANDERS are the world’s most enthusiastic cinema-goers. On average each person settles down with a carton of popcorn nearly eight times a year. Australians are the next most ardent fans of the silver screen. And in third place is America, centre of the world’s movie business, so it is unclear that attendance correlates strongly with a lack of alternative thrills. Overall, Indians made the most visits to the movies in 2005—1.6 billion—but at a rate of just 1.5 film viewings per person.

That was not my guess.

Hey, it's all about the audiences - no talking on a cellphone and etc.

Of course we are.

Seriously, every time I go to a movie here it's been terrifically well attended - not just the blockbusters but smaller stuff like Pan's Labyrinth and others. People DO have cell phones here though and teenagers are just as annoying.

Oh, people can come up with maps to prove anything, wendersfan. 40 percent of all people know that.

Misleading chart. New Zealand and Australia are shown as different countries, as are the USA and Canada.

Despite the huge film industry, India simply has a lot of people who can't afford to see any movies, ever.

If you considered Hong Kong to be its own country, I bet it would be near the top of the list -- if not the top.

I would have guessed France, which was actually lower per capita than the U.S.

That probably used to be the case, but rampant piracy has severely damaged the HK film market. At one point HK had the world's third largest film making industry. During the mid 80's to mid 90's, the industry was incredibly creative and productive, but the market becoming flooded with easily available pirated VCDs (and later DVDs), along with an exodus of talent to Hollywood, rendered the industry a mere shadow of it's former self (the numbers of people going to the theatres drastically decreased). Too bad, because there were amazing films coming out of HK during that "golden age".

Well, they once asked Dame Edna (Everage) why there were so many great athletes from New Zealand and Australia and her answer was:

"Well, they have no distractions, you see."
