The 20 Best "That Guys" of All Time

What is a "That Guy"? A That Guy is a B-list character actor who's just talented enough secure bit parts in a handful of movies every year, but not quite talented enough to become a brand-name star like Chris Kattan. Some specialize in playing villains and others in having freaky-enormous chest tattoos, but combined, these brave, barely handsome men have appeared in every single movie produced in the last decade.

Michael Ironside and his losing-arms trait is not on the list.

Interesting I would've expected Chris Penn to be on it. Or Chris Kattan.

What? No mention of "The Thing" or "They Live" for Keith David? Seriously.

I knew over half of those guys anyway. I used to think that JK Simmons was really Sam Elliott after a big shave.

They didn't mention that Lane Smith is deceased.

Does anyone get the Dylan Baker-Michael Clarke Duncan comparison?

Two of those guys were in The Talented Mr. Ripley. It's actually a pretty decent list, especially when you realize that they didn't start making movies until 1972 or so...

Fametracker's been doing this for years:
Hey! It's That Guy!
It's even named in honor of J.T. Walsh.

That list cracked me up. Very funny indeed. I agree with most choices. However i think they missed off one big name.....Al Leong. He along with one other Asian/American actor (whos name escapes me...but is also in Rapid Fire with him and i think also Big Trouble In Little China) seems to have appeared in every action movie over the last 20 years.

What? No Udo Kier?

Also the "poor man's" joke only worked for David Morse.

Let's not forget Noel Gugliemi, always memorable as "Hispanic Thug #2" in, what, over a dozen movies?

I haven't even seen Zeljko Ivanek in anything outside of 24. I think they could've used a few more Brits though like Brian Cox or Jim Broadbent.

That's what I was thinking, but maybe he's not a "that guy" but more of a "that one guy's brother"
Graham Greene should also be on that list. He's "that Indian guy"

Otherwise a pretty good list,
Stephen Tobolowsky... BING!

Tom Wilkinson is "a poor man's John Voigt"? Wow, those are some harsh words. Wilkinson has had pretty large roles in some critically acclaimed films. I don't know if I'd agree that he is "that guy".

Before his role on Entourage, Jeremy Piven was well on his way to making the top five.

IMO, I am glad they are not on there. They both have established themselves to be more than your typical "b-list" actor tackling very good roles in many very good movies.

And I am really surprised that Tom Wilkinson is on that list. Poor man's Jon Voight? Maybe in the 70s. But he surpasses Jon Voight in every imaginable way now.

I think "that guy" actors lose their "that guy" status when the majority of people know their names.

After I saw JT Walsh on the list, I quickly said to myself -- where the hell is M. Emmet Walsh?

Write in vote for Wes Studi (and he should probably win some other award for being in every movie ever made with a Native American in it)

I think William Mapother definitely qualifies for "that guy" status. His filmography is quite extensive. He is also Tom Cruise's cousin.
