Well, I'm more than willing to spend the $10 to sit in the front row and drool over Parker Posey on a giant screen, but it still seems an odd marketing decision to me.

Bring a date!

I believe The Wind That Shakes the Barley premiered in theatres and on PPV at the same time.

actually, IIRC, the dvd comes out on tuesday (5/22). IIRC, this is the second "major" release to do this - bubble being the first. the wind that shakes the barley was available in the US on R2 dvd when it had its theatrical release (over st. patrick's day weekend, i think).

anyway, i am looking forward to seeing what hal hartley has in mind for continuing the story of one of my favorite movies, henry fool.

the DVD does have features. they seem to be easy to find now but before when I was looking I couldn't find anything. there's a featurette, deleted scenes and an episode of a movie-doc TV show about the film.

Ah, Mark Cuban... "simultaneous theater and DVD release is the way of the future!"

Unfortunately for him, it's not the way of the present. Not yet, anyway.

The DVD is out in regular retail stores on Tue, but is available for sale at the Landmark theaters it's being shown today. All these films are also shown on the HD TV Network "HDNet Movies" the same day of theatrical release. And Color Me Kubrick was another such release.

Note though that Colour Me Kubrick had been shown in some countries for more than a year before its US release in March 2007. I think it also came out on DVD last year at least in Australia.

I often see musicals and purchase the CD either at the show or at the store immediately afterwards. I'd gladly walk out of a movie I loved in the theater and pay $15-20 bucks to take the DVD home with me.

I think this is a great thing.

as for the film; Fay Grim - that was just plain out weird, trying to formulate an opinion of the film, so far it aint positive.

Really enjoyed this and loving this distribution since I get HDNet.

First hour was great, just hilarious for me. It takes a more serious turn but the espionage stuff was fun too.

I loved HENRY FOOL, but just didn't care for FAY GRIM. There's really no reason for the HENRY FOOL characters to be in this movie, other than to exploit the success of the first film. It was both an odd way to bring back the characters and a real letdown (for me, at least) to fans.

Now had I saw FAY GRIM before HENRY FOOL, I might not feel the same way...but there is a real disconnect between what we know from the first movie and what happens in FAY GRIM.

Maybe Hal Hartley was given the option of making a film for quick and cheap, and figured "well, not enough people saw Henry Fool, so I'll make something that'll make people want to see that".

Make one half-baked sequel and voila! EVERY critic says "this doesn't match up to the excellent Henry Fool"... and the reader of that review seeks the little 1998 movie out.

It's FOOLPROOF, I tell you, FOOLPROOF! And not ridiculous in the least.
