Who exactly is the star of Goodfellas?
I mean, when you say to someone, "Have you seen Goodfellas?", most people say something like "Yeah, starring Robert Deniro right?"
But clearly the movie was centered around Henry Hill's life, not Jimmy Conway's, right? So why do a lot of people think DeNiro is the main star of the film? Doesn't that honor go to Ray Liota?

Because De Niro was (and still is) the bigger star, and I believe he received top billing despite a supporting role.
Think Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman getting billed before Christopher Reeve in Superman.

Anyone remember if Spacey got billing over Routh in the lastest Superman movie...or did Spacey get one of those "final" billing spots...you know - where the list all the actors and then add "And Kevin Spacey".

As far back as I can remember, I've always wanted to be a Goodfeather.
I didn't realize people thought of it as anything other than a Ray Liotta film with great supporting performances from DeNiro, Pesci, etc.

Well i would say that whilst Ray Liotta played the main protaganist in the piece the movie as a whole plays as an ensemble and as such one single player cannot be given the role of lead actor. The movie tells the story arc of Henry Hill, but as such it involves the characters that he knew, grew up with and killed with. I think the reason that De Niro and Pesci get higher credits have been discussed already. They were major names already recognized by the public (and studios like to ensure that star power plays as much a part in the marketing as possible) and the fact that Liotta had really not been in much up until this point (Field of Dreams and Something Wild).

When saying "Yeah, starring Robert DeNiro, right?" maybe they mean Casino. DeNiro was clearly the star of that one (or was it Joe Pesci?) - it's practically the same movie.
