A One Hit Wonder "Monster Mash" Singer From the '60s Dies

One Hit Wonder From the '60s Dies
He only had one hit, and it's still played on the radio every Halloween. Bobby "Boris" Pickett, who sang the "Monster Mash" in 1962 in a dead-on Boris Karloff impression, has died of leukemia at age 69. His sister and his daughter were at his bedside when he passed away.

The Associated Press reports that "Monster Mash" actually hit the Billboard charts three times, reaching No. 1 the week before Halloween in 1962 and then again in August 1970 and for a third time in May 1973. It's one of those songs that gets stuck in your head with such lyrics as: "He did the monster mash...It was a graveyard smash." Even Bob Dylan loved it, playing it on his XM Satellite Radio program last October. Dylan introduced "Monster Mash" this way: "Our next artist is considered a one-hit wonder, but his one hit comes back year after year."

Pickett had fun with the song and his one-hit wonder status. Just last year he was interviewed by syndicated radio host Dr. Demento, who told AP, "As he loved to say at oldies shows, 'And now I'm going to do a medley of my hit.'" In 1996, Pickett told PEOPLE, he never grew tired of the song, "When I hear it, I hear a cash register ringing."

He wasn't a 1-Hit wonder. At least not to my dad. Pickett also had some King Kong song that my dad used to always sing outloud:

"King Kong! King Kong! The white man done you wrong!"

From: the kingdom of the evil Voratians, ruled by the wicked Ak-Oga
I didn't think anyone was going to post anything about this, considering he died last week.

Wow. Either I'm not around enough or this is the first danol reference in a long time.

Well played.
